Phosphorus adsorption by functionalized biochar: a review

Dan Luo et al.

Summary: Phosphorus is a crucial element for agricultural production but its non-renewable phosphate ore resources are depleting. Phosphate release from wastewater treatment plants and inefficient crop fertilization causes pollution such as water eutrophication. Therefore, phosphorus recovery from wastewater through biochar adsorption is a promising alternative agricultural phosphorus source. Biochar, with its porous structure, large surface area, abundant surface groups, and high mineral content, can effectively adsorb phosphorus. Additionally, functionalization of biochar can improve its adsorption performance.

Biochar-Swine Manure Impact on Soil Nutrients and Carbon Under Controlled Leaching Experiment Using a Midwestern Mollisols

Chumki Banik et al.

Summary: Biochar application to soil with swine manure can improve soil quality and reduce nutrient leaching. The study found that the mixture of biochar and manure can be a better soil amendment compared to conventional manure application, leading to increased plant-available nutrients. Overall, the biochar-manure incubation stabilized carbon and nutrients from manure, suggesting its potential to improve agricultural sustainability.

Combined effects of biochar and chicken manure on maize (Zea mays L.) growth, lead uptake and soil enzyme activities under lead stress

Ling Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that adding biochar and/or chicken manure to soil significantly improved maize growth and antioxidant enzymatic activity, alleviating phytotoxicity caused by lead. Chicken manure alone was more effective at promoting maize growth and antioxidant enzymatic activity, while biochar alone was more effective at inducing soil alkalinization and promoting lead immobilization.
