Data-driven approaches for runoff prediction using distributed data

Heechan Han et al.

Summary: This study applied data-driven models to predict runoff in the Russian River basin, California, USA, between 2010 and 2019. The results showed that long-short term memory and support vector regression models performed better than the artificial neural network model for hourly runoff forecasting, especially during the wet seasons. These data-driven models provide sufficient predictive capability and practicality for areas lacking observation systems.

Long-term and mid-term ecological operation of cascade hydropower plants considering ecological water demands in arid region

Lianpeng Zhang et al.

Summary: With the rapid development of economy, the construction of a large number of hydropower plants has brought serious ecological problems to river ecosystems. In order to balance the socio-economic and ecological benefits, this paper proposes a series of operation schemes and establishes two operation models (Model-I and Model-II). The results show that the scheme provided by Model-II is more reasonable in water resource supply in dry years, and the proportions of water supply for ecology and socio-economics are increased compared with Model-I.

Summary: The study aims to quantify the contribution rates of CCHAs to changes in runoff in the URYR using a new method, TSM. The results show that climate change is the dominant factor affecting runoff changes, with human activities having differing impacts in different sub-regions. The TSM method shows good performance in effectively calculating the contribution rates of CCHAs to runoff changes in the URYR and other watersheds.

Summary: The study integrates the water balance equation with the Budyko framework to attribute streamflow changes to climate change and anthropogenic activities. Results show that observed streamflow changes are mainly due to anthropogenic activities, with some contributions from changes in precipitation. Climate and land cover change impacts on stormwater runoff in large-scale coastal-urban environments

Erfanul Huq et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the individual and synergistic impacts of climate and land cover changes on stormwater runoff regimes, showing a high vulnerability and significant increase in runoff volume in coastal-urban environments. The projected changes in climate and land cover together would lead to nonlinear responses of runoff, with greater increases noted at urban centers than non-urban areas. The findings provide important guidance for stormwater management and ecosystem protection in southeast Florida and coastal built environments globally.
