Strigolactone (GR24) Application Positively Regulates Photosynthetic Attributes, Stress-Related Metabolites and Antioxidant Enzymatic Activities of Ornamental Sunflower (Helianthus annuus cv. Vincent's Choice) under Salinity Stress

Muhammad Ahsan et al.

Summary: In a pot experiment, the application of synthetic strigolactone (GR24) was found to enhance the tolerance of ornamental sunflowers to salt stress. Among different concentrations, 0.01 mg/L was the most effective, improving various physiological parameters and reducing the harmful effects of salt stress. This finding suggests that using GR24 could be a promising strategy to mitigate the impacts of salt stress in ornamental sunflower production and warrants further investigation in other commercial floricultural crops.

Silicon Seed Priming Combined with Foliar Spray of Sulfur Regulates Photosynthetic and Antioxidant Systems to Confer Drought Tolerance in Maize (Zea mays L.)

Muhammad Farman et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effect of Si seed priming and S foliar spray on drought tolerance of two maize hybrids and found that the combination of Si seed priming and S foliar spray significantly improved biomass, physiological processes, and nutrient concentrations in maize under water deficit conditions. Si seed priming + S foliar spray increased leaf relative water content, chlorophyll content, photosynthetic rate, and enzymatic activity, suggesting a more effective strategy for enhancing drought tolerance in maize compared to individual nutrient applications.

Joint Effects of Developmental Stage and Water Deficit on Essential Oil Traits (Content, Yield, Composition) and Related Gene Expression: A Case Study in Two Thymus Species

Kazem Yousefzadeh et al.

Summary: This study investigated the joint effects of developmental stage and soil water availability on biomass accumulation, harvest index, essential oil content, yield, and composition in Thymus armeniacus and Thymus kotschyanus. The results showed that T. armeniacus had higher yields in most aspects, but was more susceptible to water deficit-induced decrease. T. kotschyanus, on the other hand, exhibited greater drought tolerance and would be a better choice under water deficit conditions.

Nutrients Uptake and Accumulation in Plant Parts of Fragrant Rosa Species Irrigated with Treated and Untreated Wastewater

Muhammad Ahsan et al.

Summary: Water scarcity has put tremendous pressure on the agri-based economy of countries like Pakistan, and the reuse of untreated wastewater as an alternative irrigation source has been considered. This study examines the effect of treated and untreated wastewater irrigation on nutrient concentrations in different parts of four scented Rosa species. The results show that untreated wastewater irrigation significantly increases the concentration of certain nutrients and metals in the plants, highlighting the need for treatment when using untreated wastewater in water-scarce areas.

Potency of Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles, Sodium Hydrogen Sulfide and Salicylic Acid in Ameliorating the Depressive Effects of Water Deficit on Periwinkle Ornamental Quality

Nahid Zomorrodi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different concentrations of sodium hydrosulfide (NaSH), salicylic acid (SA), and titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO(2)NPs) on periwinkle, and found that water deficit had negative impacts on ornamental quality, stem strength, longevity, light interception and carbon assimilation. Spray treatments improved most traits, increased carotenoid content and activities of catalase and peroxidase. The study provides practical methods to enhance ornamental quality and longevity, particularly under irregular or limited water supply.
