Grapevine Phenology of White Cultivars in Rueda Designation of Origin (Spain) in Response to Weather Conditions and Potential Shifts under Warmer Climate

Maria Concepcion Ramos et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to analyze the phenological response of Verdejo variety compared to Viura and Sauvignon Blanc varieties in Rueda Designation of Origin, Spain, under present and projected climate change scenarios. Phenological dates and weather conditions were analyzed for the period 2008-2021, and projections were made for 2050 and 2070 under two emission scenarios. The results showed that all phenological dates would advance, especially veraison and ripening.

Manipulating the severe shoot topping delays the harvest date and modifies the flavor composition of Cabernet Sauvignon wines in a semi-arid climate

Hao-Cheng Lu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to mitigate the adverse effects of global warming by applying severe shoot topping (SST) to grapevines in a semi-arid climate. A three-year study (2018-2020) was conducted to investigate the impact of SST on wine flavor composition. Results showed that SST effectively delayed the grape harvest date and significantly increased the concentration of myricetin-based flavonols in wines. The SST wines were characterized by more abundant phenolic compounds and higher sensory scores.

A study of kaolin effects on grapevine physiology and its ability to protect grape clusters from sunburn damage

Turcan Teker

Summary: Sunburn damage on grape berries has increased in the Mediterranean region, especially on the west side of vineyards. Kaolin particle film (KPF), a radiation-reflecting substance, is known for its ability to lower fruit temperature. However, there is limited evidence that it can prevent sunburn damage to grapes.

Potential and Actual Bud Fruitfulness: A Tool for Predicting and Managing the Yield of Table Grape Varieties

Giuseppe Ferrara et al.

Summary: Microscopic bud dissection can be used to assess grapevine bud fruitfulness prior to winter pruning, providing useful insights for viticulturists to guide their pruning practices and predict potential yield. The findings suggest that bud dissection can offer valuable data for vineyard management decisions.

Ethephon-induced leaf senescence increases the concentration of yeast-assimilable nitrogen in grape must (Vitis vinifera cv. Riesling)

M. Hendgen et al.

Summary: The study showed that inducing leaf senescence with ethephon can increase the YAN concentration in grape must, leading to improved nutritional value of grapes and fermentability of grape must.
