A systematic review on the role of alpha linolenic acid (ALA) in combating non-communicable diseases (NCDs)

Simran Gogna et al.

Summary: This paper highlights the health benefits and functional role of alpha linolenic acid (ALA) in combating diet-related non-communicable diseases. It discusses the sources, absorption, metabolism, toxicity and extraction of ALA. The findings indicate that ALA, an omega-3 fatty acid, has various positive effects on cardiovascular functions, blood pressure regulation, neurological disorders, post-menopausal symptoms, and hormone levels in women with PCOS. However, excessive consumption of ALA may lead to gastrointestinal disturbances. Different extraction techniques are used to extract ALA from its sources.
