Epidemiological Survey on Tick-Borne Pathogens with Zoonotic Potential in Dog Populations of Southern Ethiopia

Hana Tadesse et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of tick-borne pathogens in dogs in low-income tropical countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. The results showed that dogs in Ethiopia carried various tick-borne pathogens, including Hepatozoon canis, Babesia canis rossi, Anaplasma phagocythophilum, Ehrlichia canis, Borrelia spp., and Rickettsia spp. Some of these pathogens, such as Anaplasma phagocythophilum and species of Borrelia and Rickettsia, have zoonotic potential, which calls for further investigation. The findings contribute to a better understanding of the epidemiology of tick-borne pathogens and their impact on human and animal health.

Summary: This study investigated the blood samples of 150 owned guard dogs in the southwest of Nigeria and found that 12% of samples tested positive for at least one pathogen. The prevalence of vector-borne pathogens in these dogs was lower than previous studies, possibly due to regular monitoring and treatment at veterinary clinics.

Ehrlichiosis in Dogs: A Comprehensive Review about the Pathogen and Its Vectors with Emphasis on South and East Asian Countries

Muhammad Umair Aziz et al.

Summary: Ehrlichiosis in dogs is caused by Ehrlichia bacteria, with Ehrlichia canis being the most pathogenic species. Rhipicephalus sanguineus is the main vector, but Haemaphysalis longicornis is also involved in transmission in east Asian countries. The disease has acute, subclinical, and chronic clinical manifestations, with no age or sex predilection. Diagnosis can be done through microscopy, indirect immunofluorescence test (IFAT), and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). This review provides information on infection rates, prevalence in Asian countries, treatment options, and vectors responsible for transmission. Canine ehrlichiosis is an emerging zoonotic disease worldwide, with Ehrlichia canis being the most commonly implicated species. Dogs act as reservoirs, with Rhipicephalus sanguineus being the main vector. The disease affects multiple organs and can have acute, subclinical, or chronic manifestations. Diagnosis involves cytology, immunofluorescence testing, and PCR. Doxycycline, rifampicin, and minocycline are effective treatments. This review aims to provide an overview of the disease in dogs, prevalence in Asian countries, current treatment options, and vectors involved, while also identifying areas for further research.

Molecular discrimination and genetic diversity of three common tick-borne pathogens in dogs in Thailand

Napassorn Poolsawat et al.

Summary: This study is the first report on the occurrence and genetic diversity of canine tick-borne pathogens (Hepatozoon canis, Anaplasma platys, and Ehrlichia canis) in shelter dogs in Thailand. PCR results showed that 25.82% of the dogs were positive for at least one of the pathogens. The study also revealed the genetic diversity of the pathogens, with Anaplasma platys being the most diverse and Hepatozoon canis and Ehrlichia canis being more conserved. These findings can be used to improve the diagnosis and control of tick-borne diseases in Thailand.

Summary: The study revealed the widespread presence of Hepatozoon, Babesia, and Leishmania infantum infections in wild animals in southern Spain, with the first report of Hepatozoon in badgers and wild cats. Co-infections of Babesia spp. or Hepatozoon spp. were associated with an increased risk of Leishmania infantum infection in wildlife.

Guadalupe Miro et al.

Summary: This study provides the largest dataset on CVBD seropositivity in Europe to date. The decrease in test positivity over the study period may be attributed to changes in testing behavior and increased screening of healthy animals. The mapping of CVBD across Europe provides expected test positivity values that can help guide veterinarians' decisions on screening and prevention.

First evidence of vertical Hepatozoon canis transmission in dogs in Europe

Ingo Schaefer et al.

Summary: This study confirms the possibility of vertical transmission of Hepatozoon canis in dogs, as demonstrated by molecular detection of the pathogen in a stillborn puppy. Vertical transmission was also the most likely route of transmission in the seven surviving puppies. Further investigation is needed to understand the potential impact of parasitemia levels on puppy health and its pathogenesis.
