Assessment of Fish Quality Based on the Content of Heavy Metals

Summary: The aim of this study was to estimate the fish quality in terms of Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn contents. The study found that crucian carp had significantly higher concentrations of zinc, copper, and iron in their muscles compared to the other fish species. Walleye pollock had a higher manganese content. However, all studied fish species posed no threat to humans in terms of these four metals. Monitoring of the aquatic environment and fish living there is necessary to prevent an increase in metal concentrations due to time-changing abiotic and biotic factors.

Seasonal trends of mercury bioaccumulation and assessment of toxic effects in Asian clams and microbial community from field study of estuarine sediment

Summary: This study investigated the seasonal trends in bioaccumulation potential and toxic effects of mercury in Asian clams and microbial community. The results showed that mercury accumulation in clams and pore water was highest during the summer season at contaminated sites. The upregulation of biomarker genes in clams indicated their response to mercury contamination. High levels of mercury negatively affected bacterial and metabolic diversities.

Mercury distribution in different environmental matrices in aquatic systems of abandoned gold mines, Western Colombia: Focus on human health

Summary: The study assessed total mercury (THg), methylmercury (MeHg) levels in various environmental compartments in abandoned gold mining ponds (AGMPs) and mining areas in Western Colombia to evaluate the present environmental conditions and human health risks. The findings indicate potential chronic effects due to elevated THg levels, particularly in fish, posing a threat to human health. Monitoring of mercury species in different compartments is recommended to mitigate environmental hazards in the region.

A Food-Safety Risk Assessment of Mercury, Lead and Cadmium in Fish Recreationally Caught from Three Lakes in Poland

Summary: This study aimed to assess the pollution of water ecosystems with selected toxic heavy metals in lakes Dratow, Czarne Sosnowickie, and Syczynskie. The concentration of Pb, Cd, and Hg in water, sediment, and freshwater fish muscle tissue was determined, and a food safety assessment was performed. The results showed low concentrations of heavy metals in the waters and sediments of the lakes, as well as in the fish muscles, indicating compliance with EU food legislation.

Mercury, Lead, and Cadmium in the Muscles of Five Fish Species from the Mechraa-Hammadi Dam in Morocco and Health Risks for Their Consumers

Summary: This study evaluated metal contamination levels in the muscles of five fish species from the Mechraa-Hammadi Dam, finding variations in trace metal concentrations among different species, with mercury bioaccumulation being more significant than that of cadmium and lead. Additionally, the study suggested that reduced intake of carnivorous fishes, particularly E. lucius and S. lucioperca, should be encouraged to minimize the potential health risks associated with mercury consumption.
