Anyone Can Get Old-All You Have to Do Is Live Long Enough: Understanding Mortality and Life Expectancy in European Hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus)

Summary: As the population of European hedgehogs declines, monitoring and understanding their population dynamics is crucial for conservation efforts. Through citizen science, we determined the age of 388 dead European hedgehogs collected in Denmark. The overall mean age was 1.8 years, with males living longer than females. We found that traffic-related deaths were more common in males, peaking in July, while non-traffic deaths differed between sexes, with males dying mainly in July and females in September. These insights can inform conservation strategies for the European hedgehog.

Do Urban Hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) Represent a Relevant Source of Zoonotic Diseases?

Summary: Urban fauna refers to animal species that can survive in urban environments. Hedgehogs, such as the western-European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus), have been identified as part of the urban fauna and are permanent residents in parks and gardens across Europe. This study aimed to compare the prevalence of zoonotic diseases in hedgehogs in urban and rural areas. A systematic review and meta-analysis of twelve studies were conducted, revealing differences in the prevalence of zoonotic diseases between urban and rural locations. Further research and standardized monitoring of hedgehog populations are necessary to understand the epidemiology of zoonotic pathogens and prevent disease outbreaks.

Genetic diversity and population structure of the Western European hedgehog, Erinaceus europaeus: conservation status of populations in the Iberian Peninsula

Summary: Anthropogenic habitat fragmentation and roadkill mortality are important threats to European hedgehogs. Genetic analysis on hedgehog populations in the Iberian Peninsula revealed the presence of two distinct groups, northwest and northeast, with three genetically different clusters identified in the northeast. The northwest group showed higher genetic diversity and more stability, while in the northeast, some populations were found to be isolated and vulnerable.

Emergence of methicillin resistance predates the clinical use of antibiotics

Summary: This study reveals that methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains were present in European hedgehogs before the discovery of antibiotics and have spread among hedgehog populations and between hedgehogs and secondary hosts. The study also shows that the hedgehog dermatophyte Trichophyton erinacei produces two beta-lactam antibiotics that give an advantage to MRSA strains. These findings emphasize the importance of understanding and managing antibiotic resistance in both wild animals and different ecosystems.
