Cortisol concentration in scales is a valid indicator for the assessment of chronic stress in European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax L

Athanasios Samaras et al.

Summary: In the absence of an additional acute stressor, physiological indicators like plasma cortisol, glucose, lactate and osmolality were not able to differentiate non-stressed from chronically stressed fish. Only when fish were exposed to an additional stressor, cortisol response of the chronically stressed fish was blunted compared to controls. Cortisol concentration in scales differentiate non-stressed from chronically stressed fish, being significantly higher in the later.

Global assessment of the response to chronic stress in European sea bass

Bastien Sadoul et al.

Summary: Chronic stress in European sea bass leads to reduced growth, lower cortisol response, increased chloride and sodium concentration in the plasma, and altered gill gene expression causing osmoregulatory dysfunctions. However, chronic stress has no significant effect on plasmatic calcium, lysozyme concentration, and osmotic pressure. This highlights the sensitivity of gills and osmoregulatory functions to chronic stress.

Extreme winter cold-induced osmoregulatory, metabolic, and physiological responses in European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) acclimatized at different salinities

Md Jakiul Islam et al.

Summary: The study found that European seabass exposed to extreme winter cold events exhibited different physiological responses and growth performance depending on the salinity levels. Fish exposed to 3 and 30 PSU showed significant impacts on physiological indicators, while those in 6 and 12 PSU demonstrated better growth and physiological performance.

Immuno-modulatory effects of nanoplastics and humic acids in the European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax)

I Brandts et al.

Summary: This study found that exposure to polystyrene NPs and humic acids can induce an immuno-modulatory response and activate steroidogenic stress-related pathways. While a protective anti-inflammatory effect of HA in the presence of PSNPs was observed, there appears to be a complex interaction between both components.

Temperature increase and its effects on fish stress physiology in the context of global warming

Sebastien Alfonso et al.

Summary: Global warming is expected to impact the stress physiology of fish through chronic temperature increases, potentially compromising their fitness and ability to cope with additional stressors. Controlled laboratory studies show that temperature increases can induce acute stress responses in fish, highlighting the ecological relevance of rapid temperature changes in certain situations.
