Precision technologies for dairy calves and management applications

Summary: There is a growing interest in using precision dairy technologies (PDT) to monitor real-time animal behavior and physiology in livestock systems worldwide. Although PDT in adult cattle has been extensively reviewed, the use of PDT for pre-weaned dairy calves has not been reviewed. Various technologies such as accelerometers and automated calf feeding systems are being explored for monitoring behavior and physiology in calves, with the potential to improve management practices and identify early signs of disease or welfare issues. The development and validation of commercially available technologies for the on-farm monitoring of dairy calf welfare, performance, and health is strongly encouraged for future applications.

Evaluation of the RumiWatch system as a benchmark to monitor feeding and locomotion behaviors of grazing dairy cows

Calf Birth Weight Predicted Remotely Using Automated in-Paddock Weighing Technology

Summary: The study utilized WOW technology to investigate the associations between CBW, pre- and post-calving LW, Delta LWC, and NFW, finding positive relationships between Delta LWC and CBW, as well as NFW. 56% of the variation in Delta LWC was attributed to CBW, suggesting its potential use as an indicator of CBW prediction. The remote monitoring of Delta LWC could be valuable for predicting CBW without the need for manual calf weighing.

Accuracy of heart girth tapes in the estimation of weights of pre-weaned calves

Summary: The study found that HGT provides relatively accurate estimations of individual bodyweights but inaccurate estimations of DWLG for individual calves. Simulation data showed that the time between weight dates has an impact on the accuracy of DLWG estimation. Increasing the number of calves in a group and allowing for an appropriate period of time between weigh dates can improve the accuracy of group-level estimations.
