Granger causality analysis for calcium transients in neuronal networks, challenges and improvements

Xiaowen Chen et al.

Summary: One challenge in neuroscience is to understand how information flows between neurons in vivo to trigger behaviors. Granger causality (GC) analysis has been proposed as a simple and effective method for identifying dynamical interactions. In this study, we demonstrate the applicability of GC analysis for calcium imaging data and offer solutions for analyzing real in vivo calcium signals. Our findings show that GC analysis can successfully detect non-linear interactions in synthetic networks and provide insights into information flow in neural networks in vivo.

The short neuropeptide F regulates appetitive but not aversive responsiveness in a social insect

Louise Bestea et al.

Summary: This study found that the short version of neuropeptide F (sNPF) regulates hunger and food-related responses in honeybees, while having no effect on responsiveness to nociceptive stimuli. The results suggest that sNPF plays a key role in modulating foraging behavior in honeybees.

Olfactory coding in honeybees

Marco Paoli et al.

Summary: This review article summarized the olfactory behaviors and neurophysiology of the western honeybee, including aspects such as odorants in the environment, neuroanatomy, and olfactory memory formation. The wealth of data collected over a century, along with new technological advancements, confirms the honeybee as an attractive research model for understanding olfactory coding and learning.
