The sex pheromone heptacosane enhances the mating competitiveness of sterile Aedes aegypti males

Lin-Min Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that applying heptacosane as a medium on the bodies of Aedes aegypti males can enhance their mating competitiveness with females. This method provides a new idea for improving the application of radiation-based mosquito control methods.

Review of the role of sterile insect technique within biologically-based pest control - An appraisal of existing regulatory frameworks

Apostolos Kapranas et al.

Summary: The Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) is a sustainable method for controlling insects that is gaining popularity. Originally used for eradicating target populations, it is now being used more commonly for population suppression. As the use of SIT increases and regulations vary between countries, common rules for the use of sterile insects may be required. This article reviews the definition of sterile insects, the risks associated with their use, and the quality and efficacy assurance of production. It also compares SIT to biological control agents and concludes that insect irradiation-based SIT can be safely used with existing regulatory frameworks to develop pragmatic registration procedures where needed.
