Assessing the risk of establishment and transient populations of Spodoptera frugiperda in Europe

This study assessed the risks of the fall armyworm in Europe using a physiologically-based demographic model. The Mediterranean coastal areas of Southern Europe were found to be particularly suitable for the establishment of the species, even at higher latitudes. The model predicted up to four generations per year, with varying numbers of moths depending on the assessment scenario. Southern and Central Europe up to the 48th parallel north may be exposed to transient populations of fall armyworm, with 1-2 transient generations per year expected.
