Along-arc heterogeneous rheology inferred from post-seismic deformation of the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake

Sambuddha Dhar et al.

Summary: The Japan forearc is important in understanding post-seismic deformation, and recent studies have shown heterogeneity in the rheology of the forearc mantle. This study investigates the variation of the stagnant part of the mantle wedge across Japan and finds along-arc heterogeneity in the forearc mantle rheology.

Summary: High-accuracy and high-resolution three-dimensional (3D) surface deformation data are crucial for understanding complex mechanisms and sources of subsurface deformation, maintaining position coordinates of existing ground features, and supporting quick recovery from disasters. This paper proposes an approach that integrates deformation data from three methods to derive 3D deformation and demonstrates its successful application in two case studies.

Geodetic and Geological Deformation of the Island Arc in Northeast Japan Revealed by the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake

Takeshi Sagiya et al.

Summary: The 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake provided valuable data for studying crustal deformation in Northeast Japan. Through various observations and data analyses, researchers were able to analyze different timescales of deformation and gain insights into plate interactions and the tectonic evolution of the island arc. The earthquake also helped resolve discrepancies between geologic and geodetic deformation rates and identified the significant contribution of inelastic deformation in the island arc crust.

Elastic Slab in Viscoelastic Mantle: Effects on Determining Megathrust Slip and Mantle Viscosity During Postseismic and Interseismic Phases

Shaoyang Li et al.

Summary: Earthquake-cycle deformation at subduction zones is influenced by both faulting processes and the structure/rheology of the Earth. Oversimplifying the Earth structure can lead to biased estimations of fault kinematics and rheology, resulting in misinterpretation of subduction-zone dynamics. This study investigates the impacts of an elastic slab on deformation and viscosity estimation, and finds that including a slab in models reduces viscoelastic deformation in the overriding plate. Real-world case studies support this finding, suggesting that the presence of a slab can be observed in geodetic data. These findings emphasize the importance of considering the slab in modeling earthquake-cycle deformation and exploring the sensitivities of surface deformation to deep Earth structures.

Heat flow data and thermal structure in northeastern Japan

Takumi Matsumoto et al.

Summary: New heat flow data over Northeastern Japan, corrected for climate change, were obtained using the temperature profile of the borehole of the High Sensitivity Seismograph Network (Hi-net). The spatial distribution of heat flow reveals low heat flow on the forearc side, high heat flow along the Ou Backbone Range, and low heat flow in the plains on the back-arc side. However, the distribution along the VF front is not clearly divided into high and low heat flow.

Finding Simplicity in the Complexity of Postseismic Coastal Uplift and Subsidence Following Great Subduction Earthquakes

Haipeng Luo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the complexities of vertical deformation following subduction earthquakes. The results show that most megathrust earthquakes exhibit a three-segment, long-wavelength pattern of uplift and subsidence, controlled by coseismic fault slip. Afterslip, on the other hand, leads to site-specific and heterogeneous vertical deformation, but can be adequately modeled using a simple elastic model. This research has important implications for understanding the mechanism of afterslip and interpreting coastal paleoseismic records.

Postseismic geodetic signature of cold forearc mantle in subduction zones

Haipeng Luo et al.

Summary: The sharp thermal contrast between the cold forearc and the hot arc and backarc is considered crucial for various subduction zone processes, but direct observational evidence is limited. This contrast likely causes a rheological difference in the mantle wedge, impacting postseismic deformation following large subduction earthquakes. Overall, the link between long-term thermal processes and short-term earthquake cycle deformation is important for understanding subduction zone dynamics.

MCMC inversion of the transient and steady-state creep flow law parameters of dunite under dry and wet conditions

Sagar Masuti et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical properties of natural dunites and constrains a constitutive framework that captures both transient and steady state creep. By determining the flow law parameters, including activation energy, stress exponent, and grain-size dependence, under dry and wet conditions, the study provides useful constraints for geodynamics applications. The lower activation energy of transient creep suggests a separate physical mechanism compared to steady-state creep, highlighting the need for more experimental data in this area.

A Theory of Inter-Granular Transient Dislocation Creep: Implications for the Geophysical Studies on Mantle Rheology

Shun-ichiro Karato

Summary: Transient creep plays a significant role in short-term time-dependent processes such as post-glacial rebound and post-seismic deformation, with strain accommodation evolving from elastic to plastic across grain-boundaries. The study shows that the evolution of strain accommodation influences the strength control of soft and hard slip systems, with a threshold strain dependent on elastic strain and plastic anisotropy. Consequently, rheological properties inferred from short-term time-dependent deformation may not directly apply to long-term geodynamic processes due to differences in defect motion and rheological properties between the two types of deformation.

Bayesian Inversion for a Stress-Driven Model of Afterslip and Viscoelastic Relaxation: Method and Application to Postseismic Deformation Following the 2011 MW 9.0 Tohoku-Oki Earthquake

Junichi Fukuda et al.

Summary: A method for estimating the parameters of postseismic deformation models following great subduction earthquakes was developed, incorporating afterslip and viscoelastic relaxation mechanisms. Bayesian formulation and algorithm were used to estimate the posterior probability density function, allowing for quantification of uncertainties in the model parameters. Application to the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake showed tight constraints on the model parameters, effectively reproducing spatial and temporal patterns of postseismic deformation.

Dislocation Creep of Olivine: Backstress Evolution Controls Transient Creep at High Temperatures

Lars N. Hansen et al.

Summary: Transient creep in rocks at high temperatures is controlled by accumulation and release of backstresses among dislocations, as shown through stress-reduction tests on olivine single crystals. The flow law for olivine can be used to predict both transient creep and steady-state viscosities, with the evolution of backstress playing a key role. These findings provide insights into the underlying physics of transient creep and have implications for predicting flow behavior in Earth's interior.

Co- and postseismic slip behaviors extracted from decadal seafloor geodesy after the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake

Shun-ichi Watanabe et al.

Summary: Investigations of co- and postseismic processes of the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake using seafloor geophysical instruments have provided essential information on the seismic cycle in the Japan Trench. Despite limitations in spatial coverage and observation period, seafloor geodesy has played a key role in refining postseismic deformation models and understanding the viscoelastic effects. Long-term postseismic geodetic observations on the seafloor have helped to decompose processes such as viscoelastic relaxation and afterslip, providing empirical evidence for offshore aseismic afterslip on rupture edges.
