Feasibility and Acceptability of Home-Based Exercise Snacking and Tai Chi Snacking Delivered Remotely to Self-Isolating Older Adults During COVID-19

Ian Ju Liang et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility and acceptability of remotely delivered, home-based exercise programs on physical function and well-being in self-isolating older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed that all intervention groups experienced improved physical function during the exercise program, with exercise snacking considered the most acceptable. There were reciprocal associations between feelings of energy and exercise engagement.

The impact of quarantine on mental health status among general population in China during the COVID-19 pandemic

Yunhe Wang et al.

Summary: This nationwide study investigated the psychological effects of quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic, finding that vulnerable groups such as those with pre-existing mental disorders or chronic physical diseases were more likely to experience mental health issues. Compliance with quarantine, ability to engage in work, and understanding of outbreak-related information were associated with lower mental health burden.

Home-based exercise programmes improve physical fitness of healthy older adults: A PRISMA-compliant systematic review and meta-analysis with relevance for COVID-19

H. Chaabene et al.

Summary: Home-based exercise programmes have positive effects on muscle strength, muscle power, muscular endurance, and balance in healthy older adults. Training three times a week, focusing on single-mode strength exercises, and keeping sessions under 30 minutes can lead to better outcomes. However, no statistically significant differences were found between independently-computed single-training factors.

The performance of balance exercises during daily tooth brushing is not sufficient to improve balance and muscle strength in healthy older adults

Urs Granacher et al.

Summary: The study found that home-based balance exercises conducted twice daily during tooth brushing routines were not sufficient to improve balance and muscle strength in healthy older adults. Structured balance training programs using higher exercise dosages and/or more difficult balance tasks are recommended for older adults to enhance balance and muscle strength.
