Control of micro-wettability of pore-throat on shale oil occurrence: A case study of laminated shale of Permian Lucaogou Formation in Jimusar Sag, Junggar Basin, NW China

Kelai Xi et al.

Summary: The study reveals that there are two main types of laminated shale in the Permian Lucaogou Formation, namely laminated shale rich in volcanic materials + terrigenous felsic, and laminated shale rich in volcanic materials + carbonate. The former is water-wet and controls the occurrence of free shale oil, while the latter is oil-wet and controls the occurrence of adsorbed shale oil.

Whole petroleum system and ordered distribution pattern of conventional and unconventional oil and gas reservoirs

Cheng-Zao Jia et al.

Summary: The classical petroleum system concept is inadequate in explaining the formation and distribution of unconventional oil and gas reservoirs. This paper proposes the concept of Whole Petroleum System (WPS), which encompasses all conventional and unconventional oil and gas reservoirs and resources, and analyzes their distribution characteristics in petroliferous basins in China and North America.

Differences in geochemistry and hydrocarbon generation of source- rock samples dominated by telalginite and lamalginite: A case study on the Permian saline lacustrine source rocks in the Jimusaer Sag, NW China

Shi-Ju Liu et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the geochemical and hydrocarbon generation differences of the typical saline lacustrine oil shale in the Middle Permian Lucaogou Formation in Northwestern China. By analyzing 57 core samples from two boreholes through total organic carbon analysis, Rock-Eval pyrolysis, and gas chromatographic-mass spectrometry experiments, the kinetics of oil generation were studied. The results showed that hydrocarbons produced by telalginite and lamalginite exhibit different compositions and conversion rates, and lamalginite has a narrower distribution of activation energies, indicating relatively lagging hydrocarbon generation.

Pore structure analysis and permeability prediction of shale oil reservoirs with HPMI and NMR: A case study of the Permian Lucaogou Formation in the Jimsar Sag, Junggar Basin, NW China

Fuyong Wang et al.

Summary: The pore structure characteristics and formation permeability of shale oil in the Lucaogou Formation were studied using high-pressure mercury injection, nuclear magnetic resonance, and fractal theory. The results showed that the capillary bundle model was the best for evaluating the fractal characteristics of pore structures. The fractal dimension from NMR data had poor correlation with core petrophysical parameters. The permeability prediction using the Swanson model was the most accurate.

Calculation of oil saturation in clay-rich shale reservoirs: A case study of Qing 1 Member of Cretaceous Qingshankou Formation in Gulong Sag, Songliao Basin, NE China

L. Chaoliu et al.

Summary: This study accurately describes and locates nano-pores using focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy based on Simandoux model. A calculation method for oil saturation suitable for shale is proposed. The results are compared with real core test and nuclear magnetic log, showing the accuracy and applicability of the method model.

The key parameter of shale oil resource evaluation: Oil content

Min Wang et al.

Summary: This article investigates the key parameters in the evaluation of shale oil resources, including the adsorption and retention of heavy hydrocarbons, loss of light hydrocarbons, and original oil saturation. Experimental determination and study of the influencing factors of these parameters can improve the reliability of shale oil resource evaluation.

Distribution characteristics and oil mobility thresholds in lacustrine shale reservoir: Insights from N2 adsorption experiments on samples prior to and following hydrocarbon extraction

Long-Hui Bai et al.

Summary: The pore structure and oil content of shales have a significant impact on oil mobility and enrichment. This study focuses on lacustrine shale samples from the Qingshankou Formation in the Songliao Basin. The analysis of mineral composition and organic matter reveals the development of nano-scale organic pores in the shale samples, with oil primarily found in pore spaces smaller than 10 nm. High oil mobility is observed when TOCo > 2.0 wt% and EOM > 1.0 wt%, indicating prospective drilling targets in the Qingshankou Formation shale.
