Novel Mg-doped pyro-hydrochars as methylene blue adsorbents: Adsorption behavior and mechanism

Jelena Petrovic et al.

Summary: Mg-based pyro-hydrochars derived from waste grape pomace, corn cob, and Miscanthus x giganteus were successfully prepared and characterized. These materials exhibited high adsorption capacities for methylene blue and the adsorption process followed pseudo-second order kinetics. The materials can be effectively reused for multiple cycles with minimal loss of efficiency. This study highlights the potential of Mg-doped pyro-hydrochars as sustainable and efficient adsorbents for the removal of methylene blue from polluted wastewaters.

Deep eutectic solvent-mediated preparation of solvothermal carbon with rich carboxyl and phenol groups from crop straw for high-efficient uranium adsorption

Penghui Lai et al.

Summary: In this study, solvothermal carbon (STC) with high uranium (U(VI)) adsorption performance was synthesized from cotton stalk using a green and simple solvothermal carbonization method in a deep eutectic solvent (DES) composed of choline chloride and citric acid. The STC exhibited a maximum U(VI) adsorption capacity of 353 mg/g, a high product yield of 81%, and better performance compared to hydrothermal carbon (HTC). The results showed that STCs had higher carbonization degrees and richer carboxyl and phenol groups, which significantly enhanced the U(VI) adsorption. The STCs also exhibited stable U(VI) adsorption under various conditions and could be regenerated for multiple cycles without significant loss of adsorption performance. The study proposed a green and simple method for synthesizing STC from low-cost lignocellulosic biomass as a high-performance and reusable U(VI) adsorbent.

Efficient fractionation of woody biomass hemicelluloses using cholinium amino acids-based deep eutectic solvents and their aqueous mixtures

Yang Wang et al.

Summary: Novel and green cholinium amino acids-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were synthesized and used for hemicellulose fractionation from poplar. The presence of water in DESs facilitated the dissociation of hemicellulose, and DES CL: U-5 with 5 wt% water demonstrated the highest hemicellulose yield of 59.2%. The DES also showed recyclability with a hemicellulose yield of 40.5% after being reused three times.

Vesna Marjanovic et al.

Summary: Highly porous lignin-based microspheres modified with magnetite nanoparticles were used for the first time to remove Se(VI) selenate anions from water samples. The research investigated the influence of experimental conditions on the adsorption capacity and analyzed the structural and morphological properties of the adsorbent. The adsorbent showed high affinity for Se(VI) oxyanion but limited potential for multi-cycle material application, making it suitable as a Se fertilizer.

Marc Borrega et al.

Summary: This study investigates the processing and material forming concepts of using oat and barley straws as sustainable alternatives to wood fibers. By combining mild pretreatment processing and foam-forming and hot-pressing operations, strong fiber network structures can be achieved, with mechanical properties similar to those of conventional wood fibers. Furthermore, the study also discusses the business opportunities and system-level requirements of using straw as an alternative source of lignocellulosic fibers.

A Mechanism Assessment and Differences of Cadmium Adsorption on Raw and Alkali-Modified Agricultural Waste

Marija Simic et al.

Summary: In this study, raw corn silk was used for the adsorption of cadmium ions, and the adsorption characteristics were improved through alkali modification. The biosorption process was primarily driven by ion-exchange mechanisms, followed by chemisorption. The Sips isotherm model best described the adsorption process, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 49.06 mg g(-1) for modified materials. Diluted nitric acid was effective for regenerating the modified corn silk, indicating its potential reusability.
