Nitrogen compound oxidation rate in recirculation systems using three biological filter medias in rearing common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) juveniles

Mateusz Sikora et al.

Summary: This study examined the daily fluctuations of ammonium and nitrite concentrations under different biofilter and feeding protocols in a Recirculation Aquaculture System. Results indicate that the choice of feeding protocol and biofilter can impact the concentrations of ammonium and nitrite in the RAS system.

Investigation of growth performance of post-smolt Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) in semi closed containment system: A big-scale benchmark study

Tarald Kleppa Ovrebo et al.

Summary: The Norwegian salmon industry faces challenges related to sea lice infestations, escapees, diseases and environmental impact. The study showed that salmon raised in semi-closed containment systems (S-CCS) had lower sea lice infestation, higher growth rate, higher final weight, and higher survival compared to those raised in open sea cages.

Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS): Environmental solution and climate change adaptation

Nesar Ahmed et al.

Summary: Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) are a potential adaptation strategy for sustainable fish production in response to climate change, offering eco-friendly, water-efficient, highly productive features with minimal environmental impact. While energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions are constraints, RAS operate indoors and are not significantly affected by climatic factors, making them a promising direction for future fisheries development.

Nitrification and denitrification in recirculating aquaculture systems: the processes and players

Prasannan Geetha Preena et al.

Summary: One of the major challenges in sustainable aquaculture production systems is the accumulation of nitrogenous waste. By establishing in situ nitrification and denitrification through biofilters/bioreactors activated with nitrifying/denitrifying bioaugmentors, total nitrogen removal can be achieved without external carbon supplements or additional anaerobic compartment. The structure and population dynamics of nitrifying/denitrifying consortia in recirculating aquaculture systems are influenced by environmental factors, which are crucial for the success of the processes.

Reactor performance and microbial community structure of single-stage partial nitritation anammox membrane bioreactors inoculated with Brocadia and Scalindua enrichment cultures

Takanori Awata et al.

Summary: Partial nitritation combined with anaerobic ammonium oxidation (PNA) is a promising biological nitrogen-removal process for ammonia-rich wastewater, but its application to low-strength ammonia wastewater remains challenging. This study found that the single-stage PNA processes in two MBRs showed good total nitrogen removal, but competition among anammox bacteria was a concern in both systems.

Effects of Recirculating Aquaculture System Wastewater on Anammox Performance and Community Structure

Jonathan A. C. Roques et al.

Summary: Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) are promising for sustainable aquaculture development, but nitrogenous waste accumulation is a limitation. The anammox process shows potential for treating marine wastewater, with marine anammox bacteria Candidatus Scalindua as a promising candidate. However, anammox activity is affected by unknown compounds in RAS wastewater and/or sub-optimum trace elements content, and TE supplementation can help recover activity. Future studies need to identify the unknown factors and determine specific TE requirements for optimal RAS wastewater treatment by Candidatus Scalindua.
