Improved phytoremediation of heavy metal contaminated soils by Miscanthus floridulus under a varied rhizosphere ecological characteristic

Bohan Wu et al.

Summary: By measuring the heavy metals accumulation of Miscanthus floridulus, rhizosphere soil physicochemical properties, enzyme activities, and bacterial community at different distances from the tailing, this study revealed the relationship between phytoremediation ability and rhizosphere ecological characteristics. The results showed that stronger phytoremediation ability is associated with better soil environment and higher vegetation coverage.

The 5-Aminolevulinic Acid (5-ALA) Supplement Enhances PSII Photochemical Activity and Antioxidant Activity in the Late Growth Promotion of Pseudostellaria heterophylla

Julin Ma et al.

Summary: This study focused on the physiological regulation and mechanism of exogenous 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) in the late growth of P. heterophylla. The results showed that an appropriate concentration of 5-ALA can significantly increase the yield of root and biomass, stimulate antioxidation activities, enhance photosynthetic activity, and change the chlorophyll fluorescence parameters and kinetic parameters. Moreover, there were significant correlations between the yield of root, biomass allocation, and antioxidant enzyme activities.

Speciation Distribution and Influencing Factors of Heavy Metals in Rhizosphere Soil of Miscanthus Floridulus in the Tailing Reservoir Area of Dabaoshan Iron Polymetallic Mine in Northern Guangdong

Jianqiao Qin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the forms, contents, and distribution of heavy metals (Zn, Pb, Cu, Cd, Ni, Cr) in the rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soils of Miscanthus floridulus in different tailings ponds in Dabaoshan, Guangdong Province, through field investigation and experimental analysis. The results showed that the main forms and distributions of heavy metals were similar in the rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soils, with mineral content accounting for the majority of the total amount of heavy metals, while exchangeable content was low. However, the proportion of exchangeable and organic-bound heavy metals significantly increased in the rhizosphere soil compared to non-rhizosphere soil. Factors such as soil pH, organic matter content, and plant growth were found to be closely related to the morphological distribution of these heavy metals in the rhizosphere soil. These findings provide a basis for using Miscanthus to restore heavy metal-contaminated sites.

Physiological and molecular adaptations of Citrus grandis roots to long-term copper excess revealed by physiology, metabolome and transcriptome

Qian-Qian Ren et al.

Summary: The study found that root adaptations to excess copper included increased biosynthesis and accumulation of secondary metabolites, enhanced copper retention in root cell walls, down- and upregulation of genes related to copper uptake and homeostasis, and improved capacity to maintain iron and energy homeostasis. While some genes and metabolites related to the detoxification of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species were elevated in roots exposed to excessive copper, they were unable to protect roots from oxidative damage.

Responses of rhizosphere bacterial communities, their functions and their network interactions to Cd stress under phytostabilization by Miscanthus spp.

Zhao-Jin Chen et al.

Summary: This study found that four Miscanthus cultivars exhibited strong tolerance to high concentrations of Cd and showed good phytostabilization ability in Cd-contaminated soils. High-throughput sequencing analysis revealed that Cd stress reduced soil bacterial functions in the Miscanthus rhizosphere. The results provide a basis for Cd-contaminated soil remediation by Miscanthus and offer insights for improving Miscanthus remediation efficiency through the manipulation of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria or key bacteria.

Melatonin Modulates Plant Tolerance to Heavy Metal Stress: Morphological Responses to Molecular Mechanisms

Md Najmol Hoque et al.

Summary: Heavy metal toxicity is a devastating abiotic stress for plant growth and productivity, but melatonin can improve plant tolerance to heavy metal stress by enhancing redox and nutrient homeostasis. Understanding the regulatory mechanisms of exogenous and endogenous melatonin in mitigating heavy metal toxicity in plants is crucial for future research.

Changes in clover rhizosphere microbial community and diazotrophs in mercury-contaminated soils

Haixia Zhu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the response of soil microbiome, including bacteria in the rhizosphere of clover, to mercury stress in contaminated soils from Guizhou province, China. High concentrations of soil mercury reduced bacterial community abundance and diversity while increasing the abundance and diversity of nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Rhizobium was identified as a biomarker at sites with high soil mercury contents, and the co-occurrence network analysis indicated a positive relationship between the dominant module of Rhizobiaceae and soil mercury concentration. Additionally, soil total nitrogen, nitrate-nitrogen, soil organic matter, and available molybdenum contents were found to be important factors influencing the microbial community structure and abundance of functional genes.
