Dynamics of dissolved organic carbon in runoff discharge under different rainfall patterns in a representative agricultural catchment

Ke Liang et al.

Summary: Rainfall events in agricultural catchments affect the quantity and quality of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in runoff. Moderate and heavy rainfalls during the early rainy season resulted in higher DOC concentration in discharge compared to a rainstorm. The rainstorm, however, had a much lower DOC concentration. Additionally, DOC flux per hour was positively correlated with rainfall intensity.

Fuzzy Logic Regional Landslide Susceptibility Multi-Field Information Map Representation Analysis Method Constrained by Spatial Characteristics of Mining Factors in Mining Areas

Yongguo Zhang et al.

Summary: This research selected the Jiumine landslide area as the research area in Xishan Coalfield, collected and calculated more than 50 influencing factors, selected 18 factors with correlation coefficients less than 0.3, and proposed a landslide susceptibility analysis method combining the spatial characteristics of landslide factors and the heuristic fuzzy logic model. Experimental results show that the proposed method is feasible and reliable, and improves the accuracy of model results.

X-SLIP: A SLIP-based multi-approach algorithm to predict the spatial-temporal triggering of rainfall-induced shallow landslides over large areas

Michele Placido Antonio Gatto et al.

Summary: This paper presents a multi-approach algorithm, based on a simplified physically-based model, for predicting soil slips over large areas. The algorithm overcomes the limitations of AI-driven methods, which are not suitable for temporal prediction. Using different approaches, the algorithm evaluates model parameters for grid pixels based on easily available territorial data. The algorithm is validated in the Emilia-Romagna Region of Italy and demonstrates excellent prediction capabilities with an AUC > 80%.

Mechanism of wetting-induced deformation and failure of unsaturated soils

Veerayut Komolvilas et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanisms of hydraulic collapse using simulations and proposes a model for unsaturated soils. The model, validated with experimental data, effectively captures the hydraulic collapse behavior under various stress conditions. The effects of density, mean net stress, and deviatoric stress on the collapse behavior are analyzed, and the wetting-induced instability is discussed. The study also examines the impact of suction history on deformation and failure.

Effects of organic matter degradation in cohesive sediment: linking sediment rheology to spatio-temporal patterns of organic matter degradability

F. Zander et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of SOM on the rheological properties of sediment, and the results showed that the decay of SOM reduced the shear strength of sediment, especially under anaerobic conditions. Spatial and seasonal variations in SOM decay effects indicate that the responses to SOM degradation were modulated by a combination of factors such as time, location, and oxygen availability.

Limit equilibrium method-based 3D slope stability analysis for wide area considering influence of rainfall

Kenta Tozato et al.

Summary: This study proposes a method for evaluating the risks of slope failure induced by heavy rain. The method combines infiltration analysis, surface flow analysis, and slope stability analysis using a three-dimensional limit equilibrium method. It is found that this method can roughly represent actual slope failure and the use of high-resolution terrain data obtained from UAVs is important in evaluating micro-topography stability.

Analysis of unsaturated soil columns with application to bulk cargo liquefaction in ships

David W. Airey et al.

Summary: The moisture content and saturation level during loading are crucial for cargo stability, while storms and cyclic loading during transport can increase cargo compaction and saturation, affecting vessel stability. The study utilizes a dynamic finite element analysis and constitutive model to explore factors influencing cargo stability and vessel instability.

Recurrent rainfall-induced landslides on the slopes with pyroclastic cover of Partenio Mountains (Campania, Italy): Comparison of 1999 and 2019 events

Roberto Greco et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the predisposing factors of rainfall-induced shallow landslides occurring along slopes of mountains around the city of Naples, comparing the impacts of two intense storms in 1999 and 2019. By simulating the response of the slopes to rainfall with a mathematical model, it is found that storm duration and antecedent precipitation are the main reasons for the different responses of slopes. The results provide insights for the interpretation of landslides in the area during late autumn to early winter.
