Origin of organic matter and organic pores in the overmature Ordovician-Silurian Wufeng-Longmaxi Shale of the Sichuan Basin, China

Juan Teng et al.

Summary: Organic matter-hosted pores play a crucial role in controlling the porosity and gas content of gas shales. However, the development and preservation mechanisms of organic pores are poorly understood due to the inability to distinguish organic matter types under the scanning electron microscope (SEM). This study reveals important insights into the thermal evolution of organic matter and the development of organic pores in source-rock reservoirs through organic petrography and SEM analysis.

Genesis and sources of natural gas in fold-and-thrust belt: The Middle Permian in the NW Sichuan Basin

Qiqi Li et al.

Summary: Fold-and-thrust belts are important for oil and gas exploration, but the complex sources and histories make the exploration risk high. This study analyzes geochemical data from various strata in the NW Sichuan Basin to investigate the sources and genetic types of natural gas. The study finds significant differences in the gas origin between different structural belts. The results will contribute to a better understanding of the petroleum system in fold-and-thrust belts and optimize future exploration strategies.

Study on the Pore Structure and Fractal Characteristics of Different Lithofacies of Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation Shale in Southern Sichuan Basin, China

Chao Qian et al.

Summary: Gas content and flow characteristics in shale are closely related to shale lithofacies, which exhibit significant differences in pore structure and fractal characteristics. This study systematically characterized the pore attributes of marine Wufeng-Longmaxi formation shales using various techniques. The results showed that siliceous shales have the largest surface porosity, pore volume, and specific surface area, while mixed shales have the most complex pore structure. The lithofacies variation has a significant impact on specific surface area, but a minor effect on pore volume.

Enrichment characteristics and exploration directions of deep shale gas of Ordovician-Silurian in the Sichuan Basin and its surrounding areas, China

Nie Haikuan et al.

Summary: The study found that the reservoir characteristics and enrichment conditions of deep shale gas are complex and diverse, requiring deeper geological understanding and the use of technology suitable for geological features. The LM1-LM3 marine-continental transition zone is the most favorable production interval, and deepwater areas are the main areas for deep shale gas enrichment.

Quantitative Analysis of Pore Structure and Its Impact on Methane Adsorption Capacity of Coal

Shipei Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between methane adsorption performance and pore structure in coal samples from typical methane-rich coalbeds in China. The results show significant heterogeneity in pore structure among samples, with irregular surfaces and inhomogeneous pore structures leading to stronger adsorption capability. Grey relational analysis identifies the importance of ultra-micropore volume, surface area, and fractal dimensions in methane adsorption, revealing the order of importance of these parameters.

The effect of tectonic deformation and preservation condition on the shale pore structure using adsorption-based textural quantification and 3D image observation

Qiyang Gou et al.

Summary: The study shows that tectonism significantly impacts the pore characteristics of organic-rich shales. Shales from stable regions have better pore structure parameters compared to deformed region shales, resulting in higher shale gas yield. The research also provides 3D pore deformation information of shale reservoirs under complex tectonic episodes.

Gas Adsorption Characterization of Pore Structure of Organic-rich Shale: Insights into Contribution of Organic Matter to Shale Pore Network

Yang Wang et al.

Summary: The study shows that organic matter and organic matter-hosted pores play significant roles in the pore network of Wufeng-Longmaxi shale. The pore structure heterogeneity of the bulk shale is stronger than that of isolated organic matter, and pores associated with minerals enhance the heterogeneity to some extent. Organic matter and its hosted pores contribute significantly to the entire pore network of Wufeng-Longmaxi shale.

Synergetic effects of matrix components and diagenetic processes on pore properties in the Lower Cambrian shale in Sichuan Basin, South China

Xin Li et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that different types of shales have diverse pore properties, mainly influenced by matrix components and diagenetic processes. Authigenic siliceous shale is characterized by small pore size, high porosity, and good connectivity, detrital clastic-rich shale has a wide pore size distribution, moderate porosity, and fair connectivity, while carbonate-rich shale has a small pore size distribution, low porosity, and poor connectivity.

High-pressure methane adsorption behavior on deep shales: Experiments and modeling

Weijun Shen et al.

Summary: The study found that methane adsorption on deep shales is influenced by various factors, including total organic carbon content, temperature, clay minerals, and moisture content. The TOC content is positively correlated with methane adsorption capacity, while the clay mineral content is negatively correlated. Increasing temperature decreases methane adsorption capacity, but the trend may reverse at certain pressures. The presence of moisture significantly reduces methane adsorption on deep shales, with the reduction in adsorption capacity decreasing as pressure increases.
