Large-Scale Gravity Waves in Daytime ICON-MIGHTI Data from 2020

Colin C. Triplett et al.

Summary: The MIGHTI instrument on NASA's ICON satellite has obtained data on thermospheric wind and temperature in the 90-300 km range for over two years, and also retrieved relative volume emission rate (VER) data of two atomic oxygen emissions in the same altitude range. While VER data generally do not correlate with wind and temperature measurements, there are periods of observations where the VER measurements show clear variations together with wind and temperature measurements in prominent large-scale structures. These large-scale waves, interpreted as inertia gravity waves, have been extracted and characterized using the MIGHTI VER, zonal wind, and temperature products for the entire year of 2020.

Michelson Interferometer for Global High-Resolution Thermospheric Imaging (MIGHTI) On-Orbit Wind Observations: Data Analysis and Instrument Performance

Christoph R. Englert et al.

Summary: This article updates and expands the analysis of wind data from the Michelson Interferometer for Global High-resolution Thermospheric Imaging (MIGHTI) on the NASA Ionospheric Connection (ICON) satellite, and discusses the performance of the instrument in orbit. Key processing steps, including the correction of a signal-intensity dependent phase shift, are described. A new zero-wind calibration approach is preferred over the originally planned approach due to its higher precision. The wind uncertainties are updated and compared to mission requirements, showing that MIGHTI has met the ICON mission requirements. Comparisons with ground-based observations also demonstrate good agreement.

Impacts of the January 2022 Tonga Volcanic Eruption on the Ionospheric Dynamo: ICON-MIGHTI and Swarm Observations of Extreme Neutral Winds and Currents

Brian J. Harding et al.

Summary: The eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano on January 15, 2022 caused atmospheric waves. Observations from the ICON and Swarm satellites showed that the eruption had an impact on the ionospheric wind dynamo, leading to changes in the equatorial electrojet and neutral winds. These findings suggest that the dynamo plays a key role in the ionospheric response to volcanic disturbances.

Thermospheric Neutral Wind Measurements and Investigations across the African Region-A Review

Daniel Okoh et al.

Summary: This paper reviews studies of thermospheric neutral wind dynamics in the African region. The literature includes observations of neutral winds using the Fabry-Perot Interferometer (FPI) in five African locations and a comparison between these observations and predictions from the horizontal wind model (HWM-14). FPI measurements have been reported in South Africa and Morocco for the mid-latitude regions and in the Ivory Coast, Ethiopia, and Nigeria for the low latitude regions. The HWM-14 is able to reproduce the climatological behavior of the meridional and zonal winds, with higher accuracy in the northern hemisphere stations.

Validation of MIGHTI/ICON Atmospheric Wind Observations over China Region Based on Meteor Radar and Horizontal Wind Model (HWM14)

Zhou Chen et al.

Summary: This study compares and analyzes the measurement results of the MIGHTI/ICON satellite and meteor radar to verify the accuracy of horizontal wind measurements. The results show a strong correlation between the two datasets and indicate the influence of altitude, diurnal, and seasonal patterns on the accuracy of horizontal wind observations.

Vertical Wave Coupling in the Low-Latitude Ionosphere-Thermosphere as Revealed by Concurrent ICON and COSMIC-2 Observations

Federico Gasperini et al.

Summary: It has been confirmed that waves generated in the lower atmosphere have a significant impact on the ionosphere-thermosphere system and especially in low latitude regions. However, the sources of day-to-day variability of these waves and their effects on the low-latitude ionosphere-thermosphere system have not been fully characterized due to a lack of concurrent global observations. In this study, data from ICON and COSMIC-2 are used to reveal a rich spectrum of wave coupling between the lower and middle thermosphere and the upper ionosphere, shedding light on the sources and impacts of these waves.

A Comparison of Meteor Radar Observation over China Region with Horizontal Wind Model (HWM14)

Qiong Tang et al.

Summary: This study compares wind fields measured by meteor radar with model predictions, finding significant discrepancies in wind speed and direction, especially in summer and winter. Consistency for meridional wind is worse than for zonal wind, with Sanya station showing the worst consistency. Harmonic analysis reveals significant differences between radar observations and model predictions.

Variations of Thermospheric Winds Observed by a Fabry-Perot Interferometer at Mohe, China

Wenbo Li et al.

Summary: The Fabry-Perot interferometer system was used to observe thermospheric winds at Mohe, China in July 2019. The observations revealed diurnal and seasonal variations in thermospheric winds, with a model established based on the data. Comparison with HWM14 showed overall consistency, but differences were found when comparing observations with Kelan FPI data.

Regulation of ionospheric plasma velocities by thermospheric winds

Thomas J. Immel et al.

Summary: Observations from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Ionospheric Connection Explorer have confirmed the link between thermospheric winds and ionospheric plasma variability, presenting challenges in predicting changes in Earth's equatorial ionosphere for geopositioning systems and radio communications. Improved prediction of Earth's plasma environment is expected through prediction of thermospheric winds.
