Rapid Antiretroviral Therapy Program: Development and Evaluation at a Veterans Affairs Medical Center in the Southern United States

Summary: Early initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) can improve health outcomes and reduce transmission of HIV. A study conducted in a large Veterans Health Administration (VA) HIV clinic found that a protocol for rapid ART initiation led to increased viral suppression rates compared to historical controls. The study also showed significant reductions in the time from diagnosis to viral suppression with the implementation of the rapid start protocol.

Development of a Citywide Rapid Antiretroviral Therapy Initiative in San Francisco

Summary: The "Getting to Zero" initiative in San Francisco expanded the citywide implementation of rapid antiretroviral therapy, leading to significant improvements in the time from HIV diagnosis to care, antiretroviral therapy initiation, and virologic suppression across all affected groups. Through this initiative, stakeholders were trained on rapid antiretroviral therapy and specific metrics were derived to monitor progress and address challenges for retention and expansion.
