Interpretation of Relative Efficacy and Effectiveness for Influenza Vaccines

Nathaniel M. Lewis et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the comparability of relative vaccine effectiveness across different studies and suggests that this comparability is dependent on the absolute vaccine effectiveness of the comparator vaccine. These findings have implications for the design of influenza vaccine studies and data reporting.

A Real-World Clinical and Economic Analysis of Cell-Derived Quadrivalent Influenza Vaccine Compared to Standard Egg-Derived Quadrivalent Influenza Vaccines During the 2019-2020 Influenza Season in the United States

Victoria Divino et al.

Summary: This retrospective analysis compared the relative vaccine effectiveness of cell-derived quadrivalent influenza vaccine (IIV4c) and standard egg-derived quadrivalent influenza vaccines (IIV4e). The results showed that IIV4c was more effective in preventing influenza-related hospitalizations/emergency room visits compared to IIV4e, and it was also associated with significantly lower all-cause costs.

Integrating Electronic Medical Records and Claims Data for Influenza Vaccine Research

Constantina Boikos et al.

Summary: Real-world evidence (RWE) plays an increasingly important role in public health and healthcare decisions globally. An Integrated Dataset has been created, combining primary care electronic medical records with pharmacy and medical claims data for over 123 million US patients since 2014. This study describes the components of the Integrated Dataset and evaluates its representativeness to the US population, as well as its potential for evaluating influenza vaccine effectiveness.

Relative Effectiveness of Cell-based Versus Egg-based Quadrivalent Influenza Vaccines in Children and Adolescents in the United States During the 2019-2020 Influenza Season

Mahrukh Imran et al.

Summary: This study examines the relative vaccine effectiveness of egg-based and mammalian cell-based quadrivalent influenza vaccines in children and adolescents. The results demonstrate that the mammalian cell-based vaccine is more effective in preventing influenza-related medical encounters compared to the egg-based vaccine.

Relative Effectiveness of the Cell-derived Inactivated Quadrivalent Influenza Vaccine Versus Egg-derived Inactivated Quadrivalent Influenza Vaccines in Preventing Influenza-related Medical Encounters During the 2018-2019 Influenza Season in the United States

Constantina Boikos et al.

Summary: This study estimated the relative vaccine effectiveness (rVE) of cell-propagated inactivated quadrivalent influenza vaccine (ccIIV4) versus egg-derived inactivated quadrivalent influenza vaccine (eIIV4) in preventing influenza-related medical encounters in the 2018-2019 US season. The results showed a statistically significantly greater reduction in influenza-related medical encounters in individuals vaccinated with ccIIV4 compared to eIIV4, supporting ccIIV4 as a potentially more effective public health measure against influenza.

Clinical and Economic Outcomes Associated with Cell-Based Quadrivalent Influenza Vaccine vs. Standard-Dose Egg-Based Quadrivalent Influenza Vaccines during the 2018-19 Influenza Season in the United States

Girishanthy Krishnarajah et al.

Summary: This study suggests that cell-based quadrivalent influenza vaccines may be more effective than standard-dose egg-based quadrivalent vaccines in preventing influenza-related hospitalizations/ER visits, all-cause hospitalizations, and hospitalizations/ER visits associated with any respiratory event. Additionally, cell-based quadrivalent vaccines may also help control healthcare costs more effectively.

Effectiveness of the Cell-Derived Inactivated Quadrivalent Influenza Vaccine in Individuals at High Risk of Influenza Complications in the 2018-2019 United States Influenza Season

Constantina Boikos et al.

Summary: This study showed that during the 2018-2019 US influenza season, cell-derived inactivated quadrivalent influenza vaccines (cIIV4) were more effective in preventing influenza-related medical encounters in individuals with underlying medical conditions compared to egg-derived inactivated quadrivalent influenza vaccines (eIIV4). The relative vaccine effectiveness of cIIV4 was higher for individuals with chronic pulmonary disease and rheumatic disease.
