Red pomelo peel pectin based edible composite films: Effect of pectin incorporation on mechanical, structural, morphological and thermal properties of composite films

Aditi Sood et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of adding red pomelo peel pectin to edible composite films made from casein and egg albumin. The addition of pectin improved the mechanical, structural, morphological, and thermal properties of the composite films. Films with a ratio of 50:50:0 and 50:25:25 showed superior performance in terms of water vapor permeability and tensile strength.

Optimization of microwave-ultrasound-assisted extraction (MUAE) of pectin from dragon fruit peels using natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES)

Nguyen Ngoc Thanh Tien et al.

Summary: This research aimed to extract pectin from dragon fruit peels using a combination of MUAE and NADES under the Box-Behnken design. The highest pectin yield was achieved using the solvent system of choline chloride-glucose-water, with a yield of 19.39% under optimized conditions. The obtained pectin was high methoxyl pectin with a degree of esterification of 50.77%, exhibiting pseudoplastic behavior.

Impact of acid type and glutaraldehyde crosslinking in the physicochemical and mechanical properties and biodegradability of chitosan films

Julia M. Frick Pavoni et al.

Summary: The properties of chitosan films are significantly affected by the type of acid and glutaraldehyde crosslinking, which reduces the swelling degree and increases fragility of the films. Crosslinking does not completely prevent the biodegradation of the films but requires a longer time. Ecotoxicity analysis suggests that the films can be composted.

Chitosan and pectin-based films and coatings with active components for application in antimicrobial food packaging

Jelena Jovanovic et al.

Summary: This investigation aimed to develop films and coatings for antimicrobial packaging based on natural biopolymers and active components. Results showed that chitosan-gelatin films had better mechanical properties and antimicrobial effects, while pectin-gelatin films were influenced by lemongrass essential oil. The tested coatings extended the shelf life of stored raspberries.

Development and Characterization of Pectin Films with Salicornia ramosissima: Biodegradation in Soil and Seawater

Daniela G. M. Pereira et al.

Summary: Incorporating Salicornia ramosissima into pectin films altered the film's properties, increasing thickness, color parameters, water vapor permeability, water solubility, and elongation at break, while decreasing brightness, tensile strength, and Young's modulus. The films showed good biodegradation capacity in soil and seawater, indicating potential for eco-friendly food packaging.
