Antimicrobial Peptides: Challenging Journey to the Pharmaceutical, Biomedical, and Cosmeceutical Use

Anna Mazurkiewicz-Pisarek et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are short proteins with potential applications in pharmaceutical, biomedical, and cosmeceutical fields. They have been extensively studied as antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and anticancer agents. AMPs also show promise in wound-healing and skincare applications.

Role of Enterococcus faecalis in refractory apical periodontitis: from pathogenicity to host cell response

Zilong Deng et al.

Summary: Refractory apical periodontitis (RAP) is a persistent oral infectious disease that cannot be cured after repeated root canal therapies. The predominant pathogen involved in RAP is Enterococcus faecalis, which has evolved multiple strategies to cause persistent intraradicular and extraradicular infections. This article reviews the crucial role of E. faecalis in the pathogenesis of RAP and discusses potential prevention and treatment strategies.

Antimicrobial Peptide Mechanisms Studied by Whole-Cell Deuterium NMR

Sarika Kumari et al.

Summary: The majority of research on antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) focuses on how they permeabilize lipid bilayers, but AMPs must also pass through non-lipid cell envelope components before reaching the lipid bilayer. There is a growing number of AMPs that target non-lipid structures inside the cell. It is therefore valuable to study AMP mechanisms in intact bacteria using biophysical methods traditionally applied to liposomes.

Interplay between Candida albicans and Lactic Acid Bacteria in the Gastrointestinal Tract: Impact on Colonization Resistance, Microbial Carriage, Opportunistic Infection, and Host Immunity

Karen D. Zeise et al.

Summary: Emerging studies have shown that Candida albicans plays a disproportionate role in influencing the early assembly of the bacterial microbiome and dysbiosis during allergic diseases and intestinal inflammation. The nonpathogenic colonization of C. albicans in the human GI tract is common and it can modulate bacterial community reassembly after antibiotics. Notable features of C. albicans-associated dysbiotic states include changes in lactic acid bacteria levels, with interactions observed between C. albicans, Lactobacillus species, and Enterococcus species in the GI tract.
