Action of BjussuMP-II, a snake venom metalloproteinase isolated from Bothrops jararacussu venom, on human neutrophils

K. Lisita et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effect of BjussuMP-II on human neutrophil functionality. Results showed that BjussuMP-II at non-cytotoxic concentrations can increase lipid bodies formation, hydrogen peroxide production, cytokine liberation, and release of dsDNA to form NETs. These findings suggest that BjussuMP-II has a pro-inflammatory action and activates human neutrophils, potentially contributing to local damage in snakebite victims.

Putting the brakes on tumorigenesis with snake venom toxins: New molecular insights for cancer drug discovery

Felix A. Urra et al.

Summary: Cancer cells have characteristics that allow them to adapt to stress conditions and promote their survival and proliferation. Current cytostatic drugs are ineffective against metastatic disease, highlighting the need for new therapeutic targets. Snake venom toxins have shown potential in suppressing cancer hallmarks, making them promising for anti-cancer drug development.

Investigating Toxin Diversity and Abundance in Snake Venom Proteomes

Theo Tasoulis et al.

Summary: Understanding snake venom proteomes is crucial for comprehending snake venom biology, evolution, as well as the clinical effects of venoms and approaches to antivenom development. This study reviewed a range of research on snake venom proteomes and found that different methodological strategies can enhance protein identification, while combining methods can maximize proteome coverage. Variation in protein diversity and abundance was observed among different snake species, with viper venoms being compositionally more complex than elapid venoms. To ensure equivalent comparisons between studies, it is necessary to clarify methodological differences and establish standardized protein classification, nomenclature, and reporting procedures.

Inflammation and Oxidative Stress in Snakebite Envenomation: A Brief Descriptive Review and Clinical Implications

Dabor Resiere et al.

Summary: Snakebite envenomation is a severe and complex pathological condition, involving local tissue injuries and systemic effects, including neurotoxic and cardiotoxic symptoms, bleeding, acute kidney injury, and rhabdomyolysis. The generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inflammation play important roles in the destructive effects of envenomation, and certain components of snake venom induce oxidative stress. Proper regulation of oxidative stress may help prevent long-term complications after snakebite.

The role of cholesterol and mitochondrial bioenergetics in activation of the inflammasome in IBD

Jessica Astorga et al.

Summary: Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a disease characterized by a loss of intestinal barrier function due to an abnormal interaction between the immune response and the gut microbiota. Imbalance in cholesterol homeostasis and mitochondrial bioenergetics are key factors in activating the inflammasome-mediated response. The dysmorphic mitochondria in intestinal epithelial cells under inflammatory conditions promote metabolic shifts towards glycolysis and down-regulation of antioxidant signaling. Dietary phytochemicals have a therapeutic potential in restoring intestinal metabolism and function.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between LRH-1 expression and distribution with altered corticosteroid responses in ulcerative colitis (UC) patients. It is found that reduced glucocorticoid receptor (GR)-mediated intestinal steroidogenesis may be related to increased colonic mucosa GR isoform beta (GR beta) content and cytoplasmic LRH-1 levels. The study also suggests LRH-1 as a potential marker for glucocorticoid-impaired response in UC.

Summary: The development of in vitro cell culture models for analyzing snake venoms is of increasing concern due to the complexity and synergy of venom components. This study used Vero epithelial cells to compare the effects of a crude venom with two key enzymatic components inhibited. The results showed that viper venom increased glycolysis and respiration in the cells, and the blockage of certain enzymes affected the rates of oxidative phosphorylation.
