Lipid Nanomaterials for Targeted Delivery of Dermocosmetic Ingredients: Advances in Photoprotection and Skin Anti-Aging

Eliana B. Souto et al.

Summary: Despite the health benefits of the sun, overexposure without proper precautions can cause irreversible damage to the skin. To balance the risks and benefits, a technological alternative using lipid nanoparticulate systems as photoprotective agents has been found, which offers several advantages compared to chemical and physical sunscreens.

Photochemical studies of new synthetic derivatives of avobenzone under sunlight using UV-spectroscopy

Smriti Moi et al.

Summary: This study focused on improving the photostability of avobenzone by adopting a skeletal modification approach and synthesizing new derivatives. The new avobenzone derivatives showed improved photostability, rapid recovery from degradation products, and enhanced response to the photostabilizer glutathione compared to the original avobenzone. Computational calculations using density functional theory supported the experimental observations, suggesting that these new derivatives could potentially serve as alternatives to avobenzone in sunscreen formulations.

Sunscreens Containing Cyclodextrin Inclusion Complexes for Enhanced Efficiency: A Strategy for Skin Cancer Prevention

Layan Dahabra et al.

Summary: Sunscreen protects the skin from solar ultraviolet radiation with UV filters and antioxidants, which can degrade when exposed to sunlight and oxygen. Cyclodextrins inclusion complexes have the potential to enhance the solubility of antioxidants and UV filters in sunscreens, improving their efficiency in preventing skin cancer.

Eco-friendly sunscreen formulation based on starches and PEG-75 lanolin increases the antioxidant capacity and the light scattering activity in the visible light

Victor Hugo Pacagnelli Infante et al.

Summary: Most modern sunscreens contain physical filters that scatter sunlight and increase efficacy, but the addition of nanosized inorganic UV filters can reduce antioxidant capacity. Two cream formulations were compared in vitro and ex vivo for their radical protection factor and optical properties, with the addition of lanolin significantly improving reflection and antioxidant capacity. The combination of starches and PEG-75 Lanolin is a novel solution to provide both light scattering and antioxidant capacity in sunscreens.

Toxic effects of UV filters from sunscreens on coral reefs revisited: regulatory aspects for reef safe products

Ingo B. Miller et al.

Summary: There is a significant difference in the treatment of organic versus inorganic UV filters in politics and in the 'reef safe' sunscreen market, which is currently not scientifically justified. A risk-based approach with equal consideration of organic and inorganic UV filters is recommended for future regulatory measures as well as a clear definition and regulation of the 'reef safe' terminology. The market analysis revealed that the majority of surveyed sunscreens contain inorganic UV filters and various unregulated claims are used in the marketing of 'reef safe' products.
