Emodin prevents renal ischemia-reperfusion injury via suppression of CAMKII/DRP1-mediated mitochondrial fission

Yanqing Wang et al.

Summary: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a serious threat to human health, with ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury being one of the most common culprits. This study found that emodin, a natural compound, can improve AKI induced by I/R by protecting mitochondrial function.

Effect of Urolithin A Supplementation on Muscle Endurance and Mitochondrial Health in Older Adults A Randomized Clinical Trial

Sophia Liu et al.

Summary: This randomized clinical trial investigated the effects of urolithin A supplementation on aging-related decline in muscle function. The results showed that urolithin A was safe and well-tolerated, and it improved muscle endurance and plasma biomarkers associated with cellular health. However, it did not significantly improve the 6-minute walk distance and maximal ATP production in hand muscles compared to the placebo. Further research is needed to confirm these findings.

Inhibition of mitochondrial fission protects podocytes from albumin-induced cell damage in diabetic kidney disease

Makoto Tagaya et al.

Summary: The mechanisms underlying the progression from endothelial damage to podocyte damage in diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and the development of massive proteinuria are investigated. Dynamin-related protein 1 (Drp1)-mediated regulation of mitochondrial fission in podocytes plays a role in the pathogenesis of proteinuria in DKD. Inhibition of mitochondrial fission in podocytes may represent a new therapeutic strategy for massive proteinuria in DKD.

SS-31, a Mitochondria-Targeting Peptide, Ameliorates Kidney Disease

Yuexin Zhu et al.

Summary: Mitochondria play a crucial role in the activity and function of eukaryotic cells, and their dysfunction is associated with the development and progression of renal diseases. Recent advancements in pharmacological strategies targeting mitochondria have explored mitochondrial biogenesis, morphology, function, and dynamic changes in disease states. However, traditional drugs targeting mitochondria have limitations due to poor mitochondrial absorption and high toxicity. The mitochondria-targeting antioxidant SS-31 shows promise in reducing reactive oxygen species production and preventing mitochondrial damage, but its mechanism of action and effects on renal diseases are still unclear.

Summary: The study demonstrated that isolated mitochondria obtained from MSCs maintained membrane integrity and had a beneficial therapeutic effect in mitigating doxorubicin-induced renal damage. Mitochondrial transplantation decreased cellular oxidative stress, promoted regeneration of tubular cells, reduced protein accumulation, and altered levels of Bcl-2 and caspase-3 in injured renal cells.
