Summary: In response to the global pear productivity crisis, there has been a growing interest in advocating for the use of organic fertilizers. Researchers focused on studying the microbial properties of organic fertilizers to gain insight into their potential impact on fruit productivity. Specifically, this study examined the effects of different ratios of sheep manure (SM) and chemical fertilizers (CF) on pear productivity. The findings revealed that replacing CF with SM resulted in increased abundance of certain bacteria in the soil rhizosphere, leading to a significant increase in pear production.

Summary: Ensuring food security for a predicted world population of over 9.7 billion by 2050 is a grand challenge, especially in the face of global climate change, land degradation, and biodiversity loss. Harnessing naturally occurring processes of beneficial plant-associated microbiomes is a promising direction in sustainable agriculture, but challenges remain in translating knowledge of plant and soil microbiomes into successful microbial products in the agricultural sector.

Summary: Environmental bacteria have been found to have the ability to kill aphids, offering an alternative and sustainable control measure. Pseudomonas fluorescens PpR24 showed the highest toxicity against various aphid clones and could survive on plants for over three weeks, resulting in a significant reduction in aphid populations.

Summary: The development of DNA sequencing technology has advanced microbial whole-genome sequencing, DNA polymorphism research, and the detection of genetic markers for microbes on fruits and vegetables. Metagenomic analyses based on rDNA sequencing have provided insights into the comprehensive microbial communities. These advancements deepen our understanding of DNA sequencing and its applications in monitoring and controlling the quality of foodborne and phytopathogenic microbes on fruits and vegetables.

Summary: A new in planta enrichment concept was developed to simultaneously select for phosphate solubilization and rhizosphere competence. Inoculating maize roots with phosphate-solubilizing bacteria led to plants showing a similar phosphorus status to those supplied with soluble phosphate. Non-destructive multispectral imaging and metabarcoding revealed the effectiveness of this method, as well as shifts in the rhizobiome towards bacteria with plant growth-promoting and P-solubilizing capacities.

Summary: The study found that a microbial consortium-based biocontrol product can promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in soil and increase potato yield. Metagenomic analysis indicated a higher relative abundance of beneficial bacterial taxa and a greater richness of genes associated with metabolic pathways in soil treated with MCB product.

Summary: The trend of using microbial tools to sustainably increase agricultural production has received significant attention. While the sector is still in its early stages, promising results have been seen from using microbes as biofertilizers or biopesticides, although limitations such as low efficacy and inconsistent performance need to be addressed. Advances in in situ microbiome manipulation approaches hold great potential to overcome current constraints, with progress expected in areas like synthetic biology and nano-biotechnology.
