Performance of different osteosynthesis materials in microvascular fibula free flap reconstruction

Summary: Fibular free flap (FFF) is the main choice for reconstructing large mandibular defects. This study analyzed the outcomes of different osteosynthesis materials (OSM) for FFF and found that various materials can provide good clinical results. There were no significant differences in the prevention of complications among the different materials, but the use of miniplates is recommended when clinically reasonable.

Removal of patient-specific reconstruction plates after mandible reconstruction with a fibula free flap: is the plate the problem?

Summary: Computer-aided microvascular mandible reconstruction with patient-specific reconstruction plates is a common procedure in oral and maxillofacial surgery. This study evaluated the rate and reasons for hardware removal after fibula free flap fixation. The results showed that hardware removal was frequently performed for dental implantation and the majority of cases underwent intraoral removal. Intraoral removal was associated with shorter hospitalization and the use of patient-specific miniplates facilitated dental rehabilitation.
