Proton versus photon radiation therapy: A clinical review

Zhe Chen et al.

Summary: While proton radiation therapy has better dose distribution characteristics than photon radiation therapy in certain clinical applications, there is still a lack of data demonstrating a quantifiable clinical advantage for many treatment sites. The small number of patients treated with proton radiation therapy is partly due to the absence of clear evidence of benefits compared to lower-cost photon-based treatments. This review aims to present comparative clinical outcomes between proton and photon therapies and provide an overview of the current knowledge on the effectiveness of proton radiation therapy.

Experimental Validation of an Analytical Program and a Monte Carlo Simulation for the Computation of the Far Out-of-Field Dose in External Beam Photon Therapy Applied to Pediatric Patients

Marijke De Saint-Hubert et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the accuracy of two computational methods for calculating out-of-the-field dose by comparing them with experimental data obtained from anthropomorphic phantom irradiations. The results showed that VMAT irradiation produces the smallest out-of-the-field dose compared to IMRT.

Validation of a Monte Carlo Framework for Out-of-Field Dose Calculations in Proton Therapy

Marijke De Saint-Hubert et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the accuracy of a computational tool based on the Monte Carlo code TOPAS in calculating out-of-field dose distributions in proton therapy. By comparing the results with experimental data, the study found that the proposed method was compatible with the experimental data and could be used to calculate out-of-field organ doses during proton therapy.

Deep learning empowered volume delineation of whole-body organs-at-risk for accelerated radiotherapy

Feng Shi et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a lightweight deep learning framework, RTP-Net, for automatic, rapid, and precise initialization of organ-at-risk (OAR) and tumor delineation in radiotherapy. The framework achieves high accuracy and near real-time delineation, which could greatly accelerate the treatment planning process and reduce patient waiting time.

A simple analytical model for a fast 3D assessment of peripheral photon dose during coplanar isocentric photon radiotherapy

Beatriz Sanchez-Nieto et al.

Summary: The study of long-term radiation effects, especially secondary cancer induction, is important due to the increasing cancer survival rates. A new three-dimensional analytical model to assess peripheral dose during radiotherapy has been developed and validated, providing a useful tool for accurately evaluating the risk of out-of-field organs. The model is easy to use, generates whole-body dose distributions, and shows good agreement with experimental measurements.

Out-of-field doses from radiotherapy using photon beams: A comparative study for a pediatric renal treatment

Julie Colnot et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that advanced radiotherapy techniques deliver higher out-of-field doses compared to conventional techniques, with differences increasing with distance to target. Tomotherapy delivers lower doses than VMAT due to additional shielding, and the Halcyon system has lower peripheral doses. Tomotherapy is suitable for out-of-field dose determination up to 30 cm, while Eclipse TPS underestimates those doses.

DeepDose: a robust deep learning-based dose engine for abdominal tumours in a 1.5 T MRI radiotherapy system

G. Tsekas et al.

Summary: A robust deep learning-based framework was proposed for dose calculations of abdominal tumours in a 1.5 T MRI radiotherapy system, achieving highly accurate dose distributions for various abdominal tumor sites treated on the MR-linac. The convolutional neural network trained on individual multi-leaf-collimator segments showed promising results in predicting dose distributions, with 99.4% 0.6% accuracy for whole plan prediction at the 3%/3 mm gamma test.

Hematological toxicity in patients with solid malignant tumors treated with radiation-Temporal analysis, dose response and impact on survival

Cynthia Terrones-Campos et al.

Summary: The decline of lymphocytes after radiotherapy is clinically relevant and remained low one year after radiotherapy. Factors such as female gender, number of fractions, dose-volume, and concomitant use of chemotherapy were associated with lower End-of-Radiation-Therapy lymphocyte count. Patients with lymphopenia had a higher risk of death in the year after radiotherapy.

Summary: The research investigated the radiation sensitivity of different human blood cell populations obtained from healthy volunteers. T and B cells were found to be highly sensitive to radiation, but displayed DNA repair competence. In terms of cell death/apoptosis, T cells, NK cells, and B cells showed higher sensitivity compared to monocytes, macrophages, and immature dendritic cells.

Low dose ionizing radiation and the immune response: what is the role of non-targeted effects?

Annum Dawood et al.

Summary: This review analyzes the historical narrative of low dose radiation effects on the immune system, particularly focusing on non-targeted effects like radiation induced bystander effect (RIBE), radiation induced genomic instability (RIGI), and abscopal effect (AE). Recent discovery of ultraviolet A photons emitted by irradiated cells triggering non-targeted effects raises the need for fresh examination of the field with respect to immune response. Limited research on immune response in the context of low dose ionizing radiation and non-targeted effects underscores the complexity and controversy surrounding the topic.

The Influence of Severe Radiation-Induced Lymphopenia on Overall Survival in Solid Tumors: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Pim J. J. Damen et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed and meta-analyzed the prognostic impact of radiation-induced lymphopenia (RIL) on overall survival (OS) in patients with solid tumors. The results demonstrated a significant detrimental prognostic association between grade >= 3 lymphopenia and OS, especially in tumors of the brain, thorax, and upper abdomen. Further research is needed to explore strategies to mitigate lymphopenia and potentially improve survival outcomes in these patients.
