New approaches for developing biomarkers of hormonal contraceptive use

Rakhee Sachdeva et al.

Summary: In a pilot study, 30 women were given levonorgestrel (LNG) oral contraceptives or depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) injections to identify biomarkers of hormonal contraceptive use. Serum and urine samples were collected at different time points, and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was used to measure LNG and MPA levels. The results suggest that urine samples can be used to identify biomarkers of LNG and MPA use.

Analysis of Selected Salivary Adipokines and Cytokines in Patients with Obesity-A Pilot Study

Lucyna Ostrowska et al.

Summary: Obesity is a chronic disease that has negative impacts on health, society, and the economy. A study was conducted to analyze the concentrations of proinflammatory parameters in the saliva of obese and normal weight individuals. The results showed higher concentrations of certain proinflammatory adipokines and cytokines in the saliva of obese individuals compared to those with normal body weight, with variations observed between genders. Further research is needed to confirm these findings and understand the underlying mechanisms of metabolic complications associated with obesity in different genders.

Metabolomic Profiles Associated with Obesity and Periodontitis during Pregnancy: Cross-Sectional Study with Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H-NMR)-Based Analysis

Gerson Aparecido Foratori-Junior et al.

Summary: This study analyzed plasma and saliva samples from pregnant women to investigate the metabolomic signature associated with obesity and periodontitis. The results showed positive correlations between glucose and phenylalanine levels in plasma and periodontal parameters and BMI, respectively. In saliva, periodontitis was associated with higher levels of acetic acid, isovaleric acid, butyric acid, leucine, valine, isoleucine, and propionic acid. Additionally, obesity was associated with elevated levels of glycine, succinic acid, and lactate in saliva. The study emphasizes the significance of saliva as a more informative biofluid for understanding metabolic pathways in relation to obesity and periodontitis during pregnancy.

Is there difference in the comparative and quantitative salivary proteome between stimulated and unstimulated saliva in head and neck cancer patients treated by radiotherapy

Talita Mendes Oliveira Ventura et al.

Summary: The study evaluated differences in the proteomic profile of stimulated and unstimulated saliva in head and neck cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy treatment, finding important proteins related to apoptosis, antibacterial, and acid-resistance were decreased in stimulated saliva during and after treatment. Unstimulated salivary flow appears to be the best alternative for biomarker search.
