Summary: One of the main characteristics of cancer cells is the alteration in lipid composition, particularly the enrichment of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs). The enzyme stearoyl CoA desaturase (SCD1), which converts saturated fatty acids to monounsaturated fatty acids, is overexpressed in various cancer cells and is associated with cancer aggressiveness and poor patient outcome. SCD1 also plays a role in cancer cell proliferation, migration, chemoresistance, and maintenance of cancer stem cells properties. Therefore, SCD1 may be a potential therapeutic target in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and other cancers.

Regulation of Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition of A549 Cells by Prostaglandin D-2

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the role of prostaglandin D-2 (PGD(2)) in the process of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in A549 cells. The results showed that stimulation with PGD(2) led to morphological changes and a mesenchymal-like phenotype in A549 cells under low serum conditions. PGD(2) stimulation also resulted in decreased proliferation and increased invasion and migration abilities of the cells. The expression of EMT markers, including E-cadherin and Vimentin, was affected by PGD(2) treatment. Furthermore, the study found that PGD(2) induced the upregulation of Slug and TGF-beta 1, and the inhibition of TGF-beta 1 blocked PGD(2)-induced EMT and Smad2 phosphorylation. The study also observed that low nutrient and low serum conditions augmented the effects of PGD(2) on Slug expression and EMT.
