Role of extracellular matrix proteoglycans in immune cell recruitment

Anna L. Gray et al.

Summary: Leucocyte recruitment is crucial in the immune response and inflammatory diseases. The role of proteoglycans in this process has been underestimated. Proteoglycans bind and regulate the function of proteins, such as chemokines, and also have structural roles in tissue environments. Understanding the mechanistic role of proteoglycans in inflammatory diseases is important for developing new therapeutics.

Improving hemocompatibility of decellularized liver scaffold using Custodiol solution

Marlon Lemos Dias et al.

Summary: Organ decellularization is a promising approach in tissue engineering to overcome the shortage of organs for transplantation. However, its lack of hemocompatibility hinders its clinical application. This study shows that Custodiol solution can improve the hemocompatibility of decellularized liver scaffolds, inhibiting blood coagulation and allowing successful transplantation.

Recent Advances in Liver Engineering With Decellularized Scaffold

Qingqing Dai et al.

Summary: Liver transplantation is currently the only effective treatment for end-stage liver disease, but the scarcity of donor livers is a major concern. The use of a decellularized scaffold in liver engineering has gained attention as it can preserve the original liver structure and bioactive chemicals, allowing for the creation of a new liver for transplantation. This review discusses the liver structure, decellularization, recellularization, recent developments, and the criteria and obstacles for using a decellularized scaffold.

G-CSF promotes the viability and angiogenesis of injured liver via direct effects on the liver cells

Zifeng Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that G-CSF can promote liver cell viability and angiogenesis in injured livers by directly affecting the liver cells through the AKT and ERK signaling pathways. These findings improve our understanding of the role of G-CSF in recovery from liver failure.

Liver scaffolds obtained by decellularization: A transplant perspective in liver bioengineering

Marlon Lemos Dias et al.

Summary: Liver transplantation is a crucial treatment for liver diseases, but its availability is limited. Liver scaffold transplantation, based on extracellular matrix, offers great potential in regenerative medicine. Recent studies suggest that it can help restore liver function in preclinical models, showing promise as a future treatment. This review discusses strategies, limitations, and future directions of liver scaffold transplantation.

Human-Origin iPSC-Based Recellularization of Decellularized Whole Rat Livers

Aylin Acun et al.

Summary: End-stage liver diseases result in high mortality rates, and patients rely on liver transplantation for treatment, which is limited by donor scarcity and long waiting times. This study proposes the decellularization of non-transplantable livers as a potential solution to organ scarcity. By introducing induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) into decellularized rat liver scaffolds, the exposure of iPSCs to the native liver microenvironment is maximized, resulting in enhanced differentiation into hepatocyte-like cells with higher maturity and functionality. This study emphasizes the crucial role of the native 3D liver microenvironment in the development of mature human-origin hepatocyte-like cells.

Liver regeneration: biological and pathological mechanisms and implications

George K. Michalopoulos et al.

Summary: The liver is a unique solid organ that uses regenerative mechanisms to maintain body homeostasis, unlike other solid organs that adjust to tissue loss but do not return to 100% of normal. This review discusses the regenerative pathways of the liver and the clinical implications of liver regeneration after injury.
