Cynanchum atratum Alleviates Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver by Balancing Lipogenesis and Fatty Acid Oxidation in a High-Fat, High-Fructose Diet Mice Model

Jing-Hua Wang et al.

Summary: The ethanol extract of Cynanchum atratum (CAE) was found to have anti-fatty liver effects. A six-week treatment of CAE in mice on a high-fat, high-fructose diet significantly reduced body weight, liver weight, and mesenteric fat. CAE also improved blood parameters and liver damage, and normalized gene and protein expression related to liver lipid metabolism. Additionally, CAE decreased hepatic inflammation and fecal endotoxin levels, suggesting its potential for treating chronic metabolic diseases.

The melanin inhibitory effect of plants and phytochemicals: A systematic review

Danni Feng et al.

Summary: This article summarizes the melanin inhibitory properties of plant extracts and phytochemicals. The study found that some plant extracts and chemicals can inhibit melanin production through different mechanisms. However, most of the research results were only proven in cellular and animal models, and only a few substances were proven effective in human trials. Further research is needed to develop natural and safe skin whitening products.

Focus on the Contribution of Oxidative Stress in Skin Aging

Federica Papaccio et al.

Summary: Skin aging is characterized by fine lines, wrinkling, loss of elasticity and volume, and rough-textured appearance. The alteration of oxidative balance plays a key role in driving senescence, with reactive oxygen species (ROS) being produced through cellular oxidative metabolism and environmental factors causing loss of redox equilibrium. In addition to the structural changes, aging skin also loses its natural functional characteristics and regenerative potential. The skin immune system undergoes functional senescence, resulting in reduced ability to counteract infections and increased frequency of autoimmune and neoplastic diseases.

Total Antioxidant Capacity in HBV Carriers, a Promising Biomarker for Evaluating Hepatic Fibrosis: A Pilot Study

Jing-Hua Wang et al.

Summary: The study revealed a negative correlation between total antioxidant capacity (TAC) level and severity of hepatic fibrosis in HBV patients, with higher sensitivity of TAC in evaluating liver fibrosis progression compared to APRI. TAC was found to reflect fibrosis levels differently in inactive carriers compared to active carriers, suggesting the involvement of TAC-composing factors in the pathogenesis of hepatic fibrosis in chronic HBV carriers.

Oxidative stress in the skin: Impact and related protection

Juanjuan Chen et al.

Summary: Skin is exposed to oxidative stress from both exogenous and endogenous sources, leading to issues such as uneven skin tone, pigmentary disorder, roughness, and wrinkles. The balance of skin microbiota plays a crucial role in maintaining skin health. Antioxidants like vitamin C, resveratrol, and ferulic acid are effective in treating hyperpigmentation caused by oxidative stress, and strategies can be implemented to prevent skin pigmentation and aging induced by oxidative stress.
