Analysis of response to thermal noise in electrostatic MEMS bifurcation sensors

Yan Qiao et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an alternative method for stochastic analysis of nonlinear dynamic systems to analyze the response of electrostatic MEMS bifurcation sensors to various noises. The study found that additive noise has a greater impact on sensor response than multiplicative noise. PDFs are used to investigate stochastic switching and variations in sensor states.

A MEMS frequency modulation electrometer based on pre-bias charge mechanism to enhance performance

Hongyu Chen et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a prototype of micro-electromechanical frequency modulation electrometers based on the pre-bias charge mechanism with a single-anchor circular beam resonator. The design overcomes the energy distribution issue in traditional tuning forks structures and weakens geometric nonlinearity. The experimental results show that increasing the pre-bias charge can improve the performance of the resonator in terms of sensitivity, dynamic range, and noise floor suppression.

Mode interaction induced response flattening in two mechanically coupled micro-resonators

Zhan Shi et al.

Summary: The paper investigates the dynamics of mode interaction in M/NEMS and its effect on tuning driving strength. Three stages of response in the coupled resonators are observed, and the amplitude relationship of the resonators for each stage is obtained. The theoretical study successfully explains previous observations, and an almost 1-order enhancement in amplitude stability is observed.

Frequency locking in the internal resonance of two electrostatically coupled micro-resonators with frequency ratio 1:3

Xuefeng Wang et al.

Summary: This experimental study investigates the internal resonance of electrostatically coupled cubic nonlinear low-frequency micro-resonator and linear high-frequency micro-resonator, observing a frequency locking phenomenon for the first time at a 1:3 frequency ratio when the coupling strength exceeds a certain value. Theoretical analysis is then conducted to explain this phenomenon, which is ultimately utilized to enhance the short-time frequency stability of the low-frequency resonator by nearly 7-fold.

Strong internal resonance in a nonlinear, asymmetric microbeam resonator

Keivan Asadi et al.

Summary: Investigating internal resonance (IR) mechanisms in micro/nanoresonators reveals that intermodal coupling between second and third flexural modes in asymmetric structures provides an optimal condition for strong IR, with high energy transfer to the resonated mode. This study introduces design strategies that can be easily integrated into typical micro/nanoelectromechanical systems, offering potential for paradigm-shifting applications in micro/nanosystems.

The impact of thermal-noise on bifurcation MEMS sensors

Yan Qiao et al.

Summary: In this work, intrinsic noise sources in electrostatic MEMS were investigated and quantified, with a focus on their impact on the mass sensitivity of bifurcation-based inertial sensors. Experiments were conducted to measure the power spectral densities of mechanical-thermal noise and electric-thermal noise, and a stochastic model of the sensor was presented. The model showed that thermal noise caused an uncertainty of 2 Hz in the bifurcation frequency, leading to stochastic switching between stable orbits.

Arch microbeam bifurcation gas sensors

F. Najar et al.

Summary: A study on electrostatic initially curved microbeams as bifurcation gas sensors was conducted, utilizing static and dynamic reduced-order models to analyze their responses. Asymmetry in microbeams was found to impact voltage range and oscillation amplitudes, leading to the proposal of a phase-based bifurcation gas sensor. This sensor detects gas concentrations through abrupt transitions from periodic to chaotic motions, operating in binary and analog modes with a minimum detectable mass of 120 pg.
