Long-Term Non-Cancer Risks in People with BRCA Mutations following Risk-Reducing Bilateral Salpingo-Oophorectomy and the Role of Hormone Replacement Therapy: A Review

Amanda S. S. Nitschke et al.

Summary: People with BRCA mutations undergo surgery to remove their ovaries and fallopian tubes in order to reduce their risk of ovarian and breast cancer. However, this surgery results in early menopause and long-term negative health effects. There is limited research on these health effects and the effectiveness of hormone replacement therapy. This review summarizes the current research on the long-term health consequences of early surgical menopause in BRCA mutation carriers and the use of hormone replacement therapy.

Uptake and efficacy of bilateral risk reducing surgery in unaffected female BRCA1 and BRCA2 carriers

Ruta Marcinkute et al.

Summary: This study investigated the long-term uptake, timing, and effectiveness of risk-reducing mastectomy (RRM) and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO) in healthy BRCA1/2 carriers. Over a 24-year period, an increasing number of women opted for RRS, with RRM uptake at 57.9% and RRSO uptake at 78.6%. The study showed that both RRM and RRSO had a significant effect on reducing cancer risk, but RRSO did not show a statistically significant protective effect on breast cancer.

Summary: BRCA 1 and 2 mutations increase the risk of developing ovarian and breast cancer. Risk-reducing surgeries are recommended by the NCCN. Recent developments in laparoscopy include single-port laparoscopy and miniaturisation of laparoscopic instruments.
