Update on Management of Squamous Cell Esophageal Cancer

John K. Waters et al.

Summary: This review provides a summary of the epidemiology, diagnosis, staging, and treatment of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Recent findings suggest that novel approaches to screening can be cost-effective in high-incidence regions. Multi-disciplinary evaluation and treatment, including endoscopic resection and minimally invasive esophagectomy, have become the standard of care. Additionally, immunotherapy has shown promising results in improving survival for patients with metastatic or persistent disease.

Esophageal cancer: the rise of adenocarcinoma over squamous cell carcinoma in the Asian belt

Victoria J. Grille et al.

Summary: Esophageal cancer is a common and deadly disease worldwide, with an increasing trend towards adenocarcinoma. Obesity is associated with the rise in esophageal adenocarcinoma cases. The World Health Organization reported a significant increase in global obesity rates since 1975.

International Trends in Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Adenocarcinoma Incidence

Harriet Rumgay et al.

Summary: This study aimed at improving our understanding of the epidemiology of squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma of the esophagus. The results showed a decrease in squamous cell carcinoma incidence in some male populations and an increase in adenocarcinoma incidence in others, possibly associated with birth cohort and period effects.

Cytokine-chemokine network driven metastasis in esophageal cancer; promising avenue for targeted therapy

Ajaz A. Bhat et al.

Summary: Esophageal cancer is a disease characterized by aggressive growth and poor prognosis, with high mortality rate caused by lack of targeted therapies, resistance to chemoradiation therapy, and distant metastases. The tumor microenvironment, comprised of various cell types and molecular changes, plays a significant role in the development and treatment response of esophageal cancer.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Morbidity and Mortality of Patients Who Underwent Minimally Invasive Esophagectomy After Neoadjuvant Chemoradiotherapy vs Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy for Locally Advanced Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma A Randomized Clinical Trial

Hao Wang et al.

Summary: The study compared the safety and long-term survival outcomes of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT) followed by minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE) with neoadjuvant chemotherapy (nCT) followed by MIE for locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) patients. The initial results showed that nCRT followed by MIE had similar safety and better pathologic outcomes compared to nCT followed by MIE for treating locally advanced ESCC.
