The global prevalence of oropharyngeal dysphagia in different populations: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Fatemeh Rajati et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis standardized the global prevalence of oropharyngeal dysphagia (OD) in different populations. The results showed that OD is highly prevalent in different populations and its prevalence has been increasing in recent years. Appropriate strategies should be implemented to reduce the prevalence of OD by identifying its causes, monitoring at all levels, and providing feedback to hospitals.

Prevalence of dysphagia and risk of pneumonia and mortality in acute stroke patients: a meta-analysis

Kondwani Joseph Banda et al.

Summary: Post-stroke dysphagia (PSD) is associated with an increased risk of pneumonia and mortality. Female gender, hemorrhagic stroke, previous stroke, severe stroke, and diabetes mellitus are associated with a higher risk of PSD, while male gender and ischemic stroke are associated with a lower risk. The assessment of PSD in stroke patients should take into account stroke type, previous stroke, severe stroke, diabetes mellitus, and gender to prevent and manage pneumonia and reduce mortality rate.

The prevalence and associated factors of dysphagia in Parkinson's disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Siyuan Gong et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluates the prevalence of dysphagia in Parkinson's disease (PD) and its associated factors. The findings indicate that dysphagia occurs in more than one-third of PD patients, with instrumental examination showing a higher prevalence. The prevalence of dysphagia varies across different regions, with Oceania having the highest prevalence and America having the lowest. Dysphagia in PD is associated with several demographic characteristics, PD-related characteristics, motor symptoms, non-motor symptoms, as well as decreased quality of life.
