Scheimpflug Versus Optical Coherence Tomography to Detect Subclinical Corneal Edema in Fuchs Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy

Victor A. Augustin et al.

Summary: The ability of Scheimpflug and OCT imaging in detecting subclinical corneal edema in patients with Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD) without clinical corneal edema was compared in this study. Both devices were able to detect tomographic patterns of subclinical corneal edema, suggesting that they can assist in decision-making for early endothelial keratoplasty in symptomatic patients with FECD without clinical corneal edema.

Clinical, Morphological, and Optical Correlates of Visual Function in Patients With Fuchs Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy

Naoki Okumura et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate the visual function in patients with Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD). It was found that contrast sensitivity is a useful tool for assessing visual dysfunction, and alterations in the cornea can help grade the severity of the disease and track its progression.

Optimizing intraocular lens power calculation using adjusted conventional keratometry for cataract surgery combined with Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty

Raphael Diener et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the use of adjusted corneal power calculation for intraocular lens (IOL) power in triple DMEK surgery. The results showed that using adjusted corneal power can reduce the risk of postoperative myopic shift and provide more accurate refractive outcomes.

Global Prevalence of Fuchs Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy (FECD) in Adult Population: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Francesco Aiello et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the global prevalence of Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD). The results showed that the estimated prevalence of FECD is 7.33% globally, with significant gender-related differences. It is projected that the number of FECD-affected patients will increase by 41.7% by 2050, reaching a total of 415 million. This study provides important epidemiological data for the development of screening, treatment, rehabilitation, and public health strategies for FECD.

Evolution of therapies for the corneal endothelium: past, present and future approaches

Hon Shing Ong et al.

Summary: Corneal endothelial diseases are leading indications for corneal transplantations, and new endothelial keratoplasty (EK) procedures have significantly transformed the field of corneal transplantation over the past 15 years, offering faster visual recovery and improved graft survival. However, fundamental impediments to conventional transplantations still exist, including a lack of suitable donor corneas worldwide, high cost, and risks of graft rejection or failure.

Comparative Analysis of Corneal Parameters in Swept-Source Imaging between DMEK and UT-DSAEK Eyes

Anna Machalinska et al.

Summary: UT-DSAEK appears to be a simpler and safer technique than DMEK, with similar outcomes in terms of irregular astigmatism and total keratometry values. Differences in endothelial cell count and decreases in posterior mean keratometry were observed between the two procedures, but there were no significant variations in other corneal parameters.
