Impact of Atrial Fibrillation on Inhospital Outcomes and Healthcare Resource Utilization of Women With Peripartum Cardiomyopathy: A Study From National Inpatient Sample

Bruce Ferraro et al.

Summary: Atrial fibrillation (Afib) has a negative impact on hospital outcomes in females with peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM), including higher in-hospital mortality and worse treatment outcomes. Age, low-income, liver disease, obstructive sleep apnea, and acute posthemorrhagic anemia are significant predictors of Afib.

Association between hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and later risk of cardiovascular outcomes

Clare Oliver-Williams et al.

Summary: This study compared the risk of cardiovascular disease outcomes for women with and without a history of gestational hypertension and pre-eclampsia using national hospital admissions data in England. The results showed that women with previous gestational hypertension or pre-eclampsia had a greater risk of various cardiovascular outcomes, including stroke, coronary heart disease, cardiomyopathy, and peripheral arterial disease. The associations were consistent across different cardiovascular disease subtypes and increased with the number of affected pregnancies.

Summary: Gestational diabetes mellitus is associated with increased risks of cardiovascular diseases, particularly among women with a history of GDM. This association is partly explained by the development of type 2 diabetes, but other pathways should also be explored.

Increased Cardiac Arrhythmia After Pregnancy-Induced Hypertension: A South Korean Nationwide Database Study

Yoonjee Park et al.

Summary: Pregnancy-induced hypertension is significantly associated with the development of arrhythmia within 1 year after delivery, particularly atrial fibrillation. However, it does not increase the incidence of lethal arrhythmias. Arrhythmia, especially atrial fibrillation, may contribute significantly to future cardiovascular risk in women with a history of pregnancy-induced hypertension.

Cardiovascular risk factors before and during pregnancy: Does pregnancy unmask or initiate risk?

Emily W. Harville et al.

Summary: The study found moderately well correlations between pre- and during-pregnancy cardiovascular risk factors, indicating that susceptible women may enter pregnancy with higher risk rather than pregnancy inducing new vascular or metabolic effects.
