Prevalence and factors associated with post-traumatic stress disorder among internally displaced people in camps at Debre Berhan, Amhara Region, Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study

Belay Makango et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated factors of PTSD among internally displaced people in Debre Berhan, Ethiopia. The results showed a high prevalence of PTSD in the area, with factors such as occupation, witnessing property destruction, trauma during displacement, frequency of displacement, distress, and unemployment significantly associated with PTSD. Therefore, mental health and psychosocial support are urgently needed to alleviate the long-term suffering of the displaced people.

The effect of melatonin on reduction in the need for sedative agents and duration of mechanical ventilation in traumatic intracranial hemorrhage patients: a randomized controlled trial

Farhad Soltani et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of exogenous melatonin on sedative drugs and mechanical ventilation duration in traumatic intracranial hemorrhage patients in ICU. The results showed that the melatonin group had significantly lower morphine consumption and mechanical ventilation time compared to the control group. Additionally, the melatonin group had a faster rise in Glasgow Coma Score.

New Uses of Melatonin as a Drug; A Review

Miroslav Pohanka

Summary: Melatonin is a hormone produced naturally by the human body, which regulates the circadian rhythm and has antioxidative and cell cycle regulating properties. It is currently used as a medication for sleep disorders and shows potential for preventing chemical exposure and treating other diseases.

Impact of Delirium on Outcomes After Intracerebral Hemorrhage

Michael E. Reznik et al.

Summary: Delirium after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) can lead to worse outcomes, but it is possible for the symptoms to improve before hospital discharge. The study found that most ICH patients experienced resolution of delirium by the time they were discharged, which was associated with better outcomes compared to patients with persistent delirium. The study also suggested that postacute care site may partially mediate the relationship between delirium and functional outcome in ICH survivors.

The Role of Vascular Risk Factors in Post-Stroke Delirium: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Vasileios Siokas et al.

Summary: The study found that vascular risk factors such as atrial fibrillation, prior stroke, coronary artery disease, heart failure, and peripheral vascular disease are associated with an increased risk of post-stroke delirium (PSD). PSD patients were also found to be older compared to non-PSD patients.

Summary: Prophylactic melatonin supplementation within 24 h of acute ischemic stroke onset may reduce the risk of poststroke delirium. Further randomized trials are needed to confirm these findings.

Hyperactive delirium in patients after non-traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage

Fabian Reimann et al.

Summary: The study investigated the risk factors and impact of hyperactive delirium in SAH patients. Mechanical ventilation over 48 hours, detection of an aneurysm, lower Hunt&Hess grade, and pre-treated psychiatric disorder were associated with delirium development. Overall, delirium was not associated with worse outcome, but patients with delirium often had intermediate outcomes based on modified Rankin Scale Score.

Summary: Poststroke delirium is a common complication with a high incidence rate of 39%, but detection is challenging due to various factors, requiring at least daily screenings. Age and stroke severity are predictors of PSD.
