General Characteristics, Biomedical and Dental Application, and Usage of Chitosan in the Treatment of Temporomandibular Joint Disorders: A Narrative Review

Marcin Derwich et al.

Summary: This narrative review presents research on chitosan, including its characteristics, properties, and applications in medicine and dentistry. It also explores the current state of knowledge regarding the efficacy of chitosan in the treatment of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). Chitosan has various biological properties and can be widely used in both medicine and dentistry. Further clinical studies are needed to evaluate the effectiveness of chitosan in TMD treatment.

Piezo1 Affects Temporomandibular Joint Osteoarthritis by Influencing pSmad3

Chuan-Bin Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the expression of Piezo1 in a rat temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis animal model and explored its mechanism for inducing inflammatory changes. The results showed that the degree of condylar destruction could be improved by influencing the expression of pSmad3.

Chitosan-Based Nanogels: Synthesis and Toxicity Profile for Drug Delivery to Articular Joints

Seng Manivong et al.

Summary: In this study, chitosan-based nanogels were developed as drug-delivery platforms for osteocartilaginous applications. The nanogels showed good biocompatibility with human osteocartilaginous cells and did not induce significant acute embryotoxicity in zebrafish embryos at appropriate doses. These findings hold promise for the intra-articular delivery of drugs or diagnostic agents for joint pathologies.

Comparison of Autologous Platelet-Rich Plasma and Chitosan in the Treatment of Temporomandibular Joint Osteoarthritis: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Fu-Long Li et al.

Summary: The study found that the injection of autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) into the upper cavity of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is effective in treating TMJ osteoarthritis, with better results than chitosan treatment, but there may be a higher incidence of complications associated with PRP injection.

Prevalence of temporomandibular joint disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Ligia Figueiredo Valesan et al.

Summary: The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the prevalence of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJD) among the general population. The overall prevalence of TMJD was approximately 31% for adults/elderly and 11% for children/adolescents, with the most prevalent TMJD being disc displacement with reduction (DDwR). Knowledge about the frequency of TMJD can encourage dentists to consider appropriate strategies for early and correct diagnosis and management.

Imaging of temporomandibular disorder and its mimics

Andy Whyte et al.

Summary: Temporomandibular disorders are common in young to middle-aged women and can often be resolved with supportive treatment. MRI is the accepted standard for evaluating these disorders, particularly in cases where internal derangement is suspected, conservative management fails, and a definitive diagnosis is needed. Additionally, various pathological processes in the temporal bone, upper pharynx, and neck can mimic temporomandibular disorders, potentially due to anatomical proximity and shared sensory innervation.
