Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis: A review

J. P. E. White et al.

Summary: Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) is a rare inflammatory disease characterized by late-onset asthma, eosinophilia, and vasculitis. It is different from other anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitides (AAV) and has a unique pathophysiology. There is currently no standard therapy for EGPA, and further research is needed to understand its complex pathogenesis and develop more effective treatment options.

Therapeutic effect of statins on airway remodeling during asthma

Mashael Alabed et al.

Summary: With a better understanding of the role of statins in airway remodeling and inflammation, statins present a potential therapeutic option for various asthma phenotypes. Further research is needed to optimize statins for asthma therapy through inhalation as a possible route of administration.

Real World Biologic Use and Switch Patterns in Severe Asthma: Data from the International Severe Asthma Registry and the US CHRONICLE Study

Andrew N. Menzies-Gow et al.

Summary: This study described real-life patterns of biologic use for severe asthma in multiple countries, showing that most patients continued their initial biologic treatment, while some stopped or switched to a different biologic. Patients who stopped or switched were more likely to have higher baseline blood eosinophil count, higher exacerbation rate, lower lung function, and greater healthcare resource utilization.

Impact of Obesity on Response to Biologic Therapies in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases

Mehak Bassi et al.

Summary: Obesity is associated with inferior outcomes in patients with IBD, potentially due to its negative impact on the pharmacokinetics of biologic agents. Weight loss interventions, either through diet and lifestyle changes or weight-loss agents, may improve the response to therapy in obese IBD patients. However, implementing these interventions in IBD patients can be challenging.

Neuroimaging and biomarker evidence of neurodegeneration in asthma

Melissa A. Rosenkranz et al.

Summary: Asthma is associated with neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration, particularly in severe cases. This study used dMRI and blood-based biomarkers to examine changes in brain structure and found widespread differences in asthma patients, indicating neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration. These changes were associated with glial activation and cognitive dysfunction.

Female asthma patients have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease morbidity and all-cause mortality, and late-onset asthma patients have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease morbidity.

Endothelial Dysfunction and Pentraxin-3 in Clinically Stable Adult Asthma Patients

R. Pacholczak-Madej et al.

Summary: Asthma is associated with higher levels of inflammatory markers and endothelial dysfunction, as evidenced by decreased flow-mediated dilatation and increased intima-media thickness. Von Willebrand factor (vWF) is related to age and inversely associated with FEV1 in asthma, while surprisingly negatively correlated with pentraxin-3, which is positively associated with airway remodeling indices. The biological role of pentraxin-3 in asthma and endothelial damage remains unknown.

Diabetes, insulin resistance, and asthma: a review of potential links

Tianshi David Wu

Summary: Disorders of glucose metabolism, including insulin resistance, prediabetes, and diabetes, have been identified as risk factors for worsened asthma. Potential benefits of diabetes medications on asthma outcomes have been investigated. Experimental and epidemiologic studies have shown associations between hyperinsulinemia, glycemic dysfunction, and asthma exacerbations. However, the role of glucose metabolism disorders in asthma remains complex and requires further research to establish their independent impact.

Nonrespiratory Comorbidities in Asthma

Juan Carlos Cardet et al.

Summary: Asthma patients commonly have other comorbidities, and treating asthma requires attention to the recognition and treatment of these conditions. Poor glycemic control in type 2 diabetes has been associated with worse asthma outcomes, and a substantial proportion of pregnant women with asthma have uncontrolled symptoms. Additional data on nonrespiratory comorbidities and medications that benefit both these conditions and asthma are needed.
