The combined effect of short foot exercises and orthosis in symptomatic flexible flatfoot: a randomized controlled trial

Walaa Elsayed et al.

Summary: A six-week treatment protocol combining shoe insole and short foot exercises improved pain and function and altered foot pressure distribution in individuals with symptomatic flexible flatfoot, providing evidence for the added benefit of combining these approaches.

Flatfoot over the centuries: the background of current conservative and operative treatments

Carlo Biz et al.

Summary: Flatfoot has been present since ancient times and has accompanied the evolution of humans. Throughout history, conservative treatment with insoles was the main approach until the nineteenth century, when surgical procedures became popular. However, there is still no consensus on the best treatment for flatfoot.

Radiologic changes of long term foot insole use in symptomatic pediatric flatfoot

Joon Yeop Kim et al.

Summary: This study aimed to demonstrate the effect of long term use of a foot insole using plain radiography in children with symptomatic flexible flatfoot. The results showed that the foot insole could significantly improve the radiological indicators and reduce symptoms in children with flexible flatfoot.

How understandable are the patient education materials about flat foot on the Internet for parents?

Sadettin Ciftci et al.

Summary: Flat foot is a common reason for parents to seek orthopedic advice online. However, the quality, readability, and understandability of online educational materials for parents vary greatly. This study evaluated 109 websites and found that the readability and quality of these materials were often worse than professional recommendations, while their understandability was relatively satisfactory.

Really Asymptomatic? Health-Related Quality of Life and Objective Clinical Foot Characteristics among 5-10-Year-Old Children with a Flexible FlatFoot

Saidas Zukauskas et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the potential effects of asymptomatic flexible flatfoot on children's health-related quality of life and objective clinical foot characteristics. The findings showed that children with asymptomatic flexible flatfoot had lower quality of life and worse foot characteristics compared to those with normal feet. These results suggest the importance of closely considering the complaints of children and their parents in identification, treatment, and monitoring plans.

Efficacy of Plantar Orthoses in Paediatric Flexible Flatfoot: A Five-Year Systematic Review

Cristina Molina-Garcia et al.

Summary: Paediatric flexible flatfoot (PFF) is a common condition with a multitude of treatments. Foot orthoses (FO) are commonly used as the first line of treatment, although the evidence supporting their efficacy is weak. Untreated or uncorrected PFF can lead to problems in the foot or adjacent structures. A systematic review found that FO are beneficial for PFF, but caution is needed due to potential bias in the included studies.

Clinico-radiological factors predicting the failure risk of conservative management in moderate to severe pediatric idiopathic flexible flatfoot

Michael Seungcheol Kang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the clinico-radiological factors associated with future surgical treatment in patients with pediatric flexible flatfoot (FFF) who first visited the orthopedic clinic before the age of 10 years. The study found that unilateral involvement, older age, smaller calcaneal pitch angle, and higher talo-first metatarsal malalignment were high-risk factors for pediatric FFF surgery.

Would foot arch development in children characterize a body maturation process? A prospective longitudinal study

Chia-Hsieh Chang et al.

Summary: This study used a new diagnostic criterion to investigate the development of foot arches in children. The study found significant changes in the footprint index during foot arch development and identified factors that can predict foot arch development. The study also revealed that the transition from flatfoot to non-flatfoot is associated with improvement in motor control of the ankle.

Joint hypermobility and preschool-age flexible flatfoot

Chia-Chun Tsai et al.

Summary: This study aimed to objectively evaluate the correlation between preschool-age flexible flatfoot and joint hypermobility. The results showed no correlation between joint hypermobility, as defined by the Beighton score, and preschool-age flexible flatfoot, as defined by the Staheli Plantar Arch Index. Even with the use of new methods to define joint hypermobility, no correlation was found between these two conditions in preschool-age children.
