Smooth Versus Textured Tissue Expander Breast Reconstruction: Complications and Efficacy

Caroline McLaughlin et al.

Summary: This study compared the outcomes of smooth and textured tissue expanders (TE) in breast reconstruction at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. While smooth TEs had a higher rate of malposition, they had a lower need for reoperation compared to textured TEs, which had a higher rate of complications treated nonsurgically. The time to final reconstruction was similar between the two devices.

A Novel Validated Breast Aesthetic Scale

Eliana F. R. Duraes et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a comprehensive and validated tool for evaluating breast aesthetics independently from patients. Through the grading of postoperative photographs and evaluation by physicians, the proposed aesthetic scale showed excellent internal consistency and reliability in assessing various aspects of breast reconstruction.

Comparison of Formation of Capsule Among Different Breast Silicone Implants

Xin Rui Zhang et al.

Summary: This study tested the effects of different silicone breast implants on capsular contracture. The results showed that the surface texture of the implants influenced capsular thickness, collagen and fibroblast formation, and potential inflammation. These findings provide preliminary reports on selecting suitable breast silicone implants for breast reconstruction to avoid the formation of capsular contracture after implantation.

Regret and Quality of Life After Mastectomy With or Without Reconstruction

Lucio Fortunato et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of mastectomy, with or without breast reconstruction, on the quality of life of female patients. Results showed that younger women had worse Emotional Functioning and Social Functioning scores, which were improved by immediate breast reconstruction. However, 21% of patients regretted or were disappointed with their decision regarding breast reconstruction.

Judging an Expander by Its Cover: A Propensity-Matched Analysis of the Impact of Tissue Expander Surface Texture on First-Stage Breast Reconstruction Outcomes

Wen-Kuan Chiu et al.

Summary: The study compared textured and smooth tissue expanders, finding that textured expanders had a higher rate of minor infections, while smooth expanders had a higher rate of seroma formation. However, these differing complication profiles resulted in equal explantation rates.

Breast-related and body-related quality of life following autologous breast reconstruction is superior to implant-based breast reconstruction-A long-term follow-up study

Renee ML. Misere et al.

Summary: The study found that long-term breast-related and body-related outcomes of autologous breast reconstruction are superior to implant-based breast reconstruction. Autologous reconstruction resulted in significantly higher mean scores in all subdomains of the BREAST-Q, while on the BODY-Q, implant-based reconstruction scored significantly higher on scars, while autologous reconstruction scored moderately to significantly higher on all other scales.

Review of silicone surface modification techniques and coatings for antibacterial/antimicrobial applications to improve breast implant surfaces

Mylan Lam et al.

Summary: Silicone implants are commonly used in medical field for plastic or reconstructive surgeries to address soft tissue issues, but are prone to bacterial infections. Various strategies, such as antibacterial coatings and surface modifications, have been developed to prevent or reduce bacterial adhesion. Activation of silicone surfaces before modifications is crucial for dealing with bacterial infections.

Does the Textured-Type Tissue Expander Affect the Outcomes of Two-Stage Prosthetic Breast Reconstruction? A Propensity Score Matching Analysis between Macrotextured and Microtextured Expanders

Kyeong-Tae Lee et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the potential impacts of two types of tissue expanders on the long-term outcomes of implant-based breast reconstruction. The results showed that the macrotextured group had a shorter drain indwelling period and lower seroma rate in the first-stage operation, but a higher risk of severe capsular contracture in the second-stage operation compared to the microtextured group. However, the incidence rates of other complications were similar between the groups.
