Anorexia Nervosa, Body Image Perception and Virtual Reality Therapeutic Applications: State of the Art and Operational Proposal

Massimo Magrini et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review of virtual reality (VR) applications related to body image issues and proposed a new tool in this field. The review included 25 studies, primarily clinical observational studies on patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) or eating disorders (EDs) diagnoses. The study found an increase in research in the past five years. The VR technologies have evolved significantly over the years, with the advent of low-cost VR devices providing a big boost to research works. The study also proposed the use of biofeedback techniques for evaluating therapeutic interventions in adolescent patients diagnosed with AN.

Body-Related Attentional Bias in Anorexia Nervosa and Body Dissatisfaction in Females: An Eye-Tracking and Virtual Reality New Paradigm

Jose Gutierrez-Maldonado et al.

Summary: According to this study, anorexia nervosa patients show higher fixation time and number of fixations on weight-related body areas compared to healthy individuals with high or low body dissatisfaction. There were no statistical differences in visual selective attention to weight-related and non-weight-related areas for the healthy sample.

Virtual reality in the treatment of eating disorders

Giuseppe Riva et al.

Summary: Virtual reality has provided innovative solutions for targeting different key symptoms of eating disorders over the past 25 years, showing clinical value in areas such as VR cue exposure and reference frame shifting. While VR exposure and reference frame shifting techniques have significant research support and potential advantages over traditional cognitive-behavioural therapy for bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder, emerging VR applications like multisensory body illusions and attentional bias modification still require further research despite preliminary data support.

Summary: In vivo body exposure therapy is effective in reducing body image disturbances in anorexia nervosa patients, while virtual reality technology and embodiment-based procedures can help overcome limitations and confront fears. This study provides evidence that enhanced VR-based body exposure therapy is more effective than traditional interventions in treating AN.
