Impact of antithrombotic therapy on acute and delayed intracranial haemorrhage and evaluation of the need of short-term hospitalisation based on CT findings after mild traumatic brain injury: experience from an oral and maxillofacial surgery unit

Andreas Sakkas et al.

Summary: The study aimed to compare the prevalence of acute and delayed intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) in patients with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) who were on antithrombotic medication. It was found that antithrombotic therapy does not increase the risk of ICH after mTBI. Certain clinical characteristics such as loss of consciousness, amnesia, headache, dizziness, and nausea are associated with an increased risk of acute ICH.

Management of older adults after mild head trauma in an oral and maxillofacial surgery clinic

Andreas Sakkas et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) and treatment outcome after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) in patients aged >= 65 years. The study found that older patients had low rates of acute and delayed intracranial hemorrhage and mortality after mTBI. Risk factors for intracranial complications included a decreasing Glasgow Coma Scale score, loss of consciousness, amnesia, cephalgia, somnolence, dizziness, and nausea.

Reappraising the need for a control CT in mild head injury patients on anticoagulation

Renata Sofia Ferreira Marques et al.

Summary: An observational study on head injury patients on anticoagulation therapy found a low prevalence of de novo intracranial hemorrhage in control head CT scans. Patients without intracranial hemorrhage on admission CT scans may be discharged with a caregiver, after being informed about red flags, as the risk of further hemorrhage is rare.

Delayed Intracranial Hemorrhage After Blunt Head Injury With Direct Oral Anticoagulants

Tahereh Soleimani et al.

Summary: This study estimated the risk of delayed intracranial hemorrhage among patients on DOACs following blunt head injury. The findings suggest that for patients taking only DOACs without concurrent antiplatelet medication, admission and repeat head CT may not be necessary after confirming a negative initial CT scan.
