Association Between Muscle Morphology Changes, Cervical Spine Degeneration, and Clinical Features in Patients with Chronic Nonspecific Neck Pain: A Magnetic Resonance Imaging Analysis

Zhengqi Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the correlations among cervical paraspinal muscle morphology changes, cervical degeneration, and clinical features in patients with chronic nonspecific neck pain (CNSNP). The results showed significant correlations between muscle morphology changes and disc degeneration, cervical balance, severity of neck pain and disability, and frequency of acute neck pain recurrence. The findings imply a complex contribution of muscle morphological changes to cervical degeneration and the clinical course of CNSNP.

The cervical spine demonstrates less postoperative bone loss than the lumbar spine

Stephan N. Salzmann et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the changes in bone mineral density (BMD) in adjacent vertebrae following anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). The results showed a small decrease of 1.5% in BMD at the level above the upper instrumented vertebra, suggesting that the impact of ACDF surgery on adjacent levels may be less compared to lumbar fusion procedures which had 10%-20% BMD loss.

Bone Density Distribution in the Cervical Spine

Francis Lovecchio et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the differences in cervical Hounsfield units (HU) and their relationships with age, comorbidities, and cervical alignment. It also proposed a technique to measure HU in the lateral masses. The study found that bone density varied by level, with the lowest density in the lower cervical spine. The reliability of HU scoring in the lateral masses was poor. Therefore, a level-specific approach to bone density should be considered in surgical planning.

Does the asymmetry and extension function of the preoperative cervical paraspinal extensor predict postoperative cervical sagittal deformity in patients who undergo modified laminoplasty?

Sibo Lin et al.

Summary: This study found that preoperative extension dysfunction of cervical paraspinal extensors (CPEs), asymmetry at the C6 level cervical extensors, and cervical extensor cross-sectional areas (CSAs) without fatty infiltration at the C4 and C6 levels were associated with cervical sagittal imbalance after modified laminoplasty. These factors can be considered when future spine surgeons formulate surgical plans.
